Qiongye Chen
- PhD Student
- JOURNALISM

Qiongye Chen was born and raised on a small island in the Zhoushan Archipelago off the east coast of China and developed an interest in journalism in high school. During those days, one of the things she looked forward to most every week was pulling a copy of Southern Weekly — known for its in-depth and investigative reporting — out of the mailbox.
Qiongye believes that journalism, ideally, has a magic power to shed light on the vulnerable and diminish social injustice and inequity. Since then, she has dreamed of becoming a journalist. During her undergraduate years, Qiongye interned at several news outlets in Shanghai. She earned her master’s degree in journalism from Michigan State University in 2019. During her studies there, her work appeared in Great Lakes Echo, The Holland Sentinel and HOMTV. Before returning to the U.S. to pursue her doctoral degree, she worked as a journalist at Jiemian News in Shanghai, covering K-12 and higher education.
Qiongye’s research examines newsroom unionization, working conditions of journalists, and the impact of digital technologies on journalistic practices in the U.S. Outside of academia, she loves to explore new coffee shops and restaurants and enjoys hiking.
