Meghan Cohen

Meghan Sobel Cohen is an associate professor of journalism. Her research focuses on decolonizing global media theories and research methods, the role of media systems in non-democratic contexts and the role of media in combating human rights abuses and humanitarian crises. She has given a TEDx talk that has been viewed more than 1.5 million times, and she has published in journals such as International Journal of Press/Politics, International Journal of Communication, Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, African Journalism Studies and International Communication Gazette. Her most recent book, Press Freedom and the (Crooked) Path Toward Democracy: Lessons from Journalists in East Africa, was published in 2023 with Oxford University Press.  

Before coming to CU, Cohen spent a decade at Regis University, where she taught, researched and served as department chair in the Department of Communication. She has a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, an M.A. from the University of Denver and, very proudly, an undergraduate degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
