Hong Tien Vu is an associate professor in the Department of Journalism. He is also the director of the Center for Environmental Journalism.
Vu’s research explores the multidimensional changes in journalism and nonprofit practices in addressing global challenges including climate change, environmental degradation, information disorder, and rising social inequalities - particularly in the context of rapidly evolving technologies. His work has been published in various academic journals including Science Communication, Digital Journalism, Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, Journalism Studies, and Global and Environmental Change.
Before joining the University of Colorado in Fall 2025, Vu was the Clyde & Betty Reed Professor of Journalism at the William Allen White School of Journalism & Mass Communications, University of Kansas. Vu obtained his PhD from the School of Journalism & Media, University of Texas at Austin, his master’s degree in journalism from the University of Kansas on Fulbright scholarship, and his bachelor’s degree in linguistics, from Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
Vu’s academic interests have been shaped by his professional experience. Prior to academia, he worked as a journalist for various news organizations, including the Associated Press. His experience in nonprofit communication includes work with Oxfam and other global NGOs.
