Joshua Paup

Joshua Paup is a second-year PhD student working under the supervision of Robin Burke in That Recommender Systems Lab. Prior to starting the PhD program, Joshua also attended CU where he completed his BA in computer science and mathematics in the summer of 2021 and his MS in information science in the spring of 2023.
Joshua’s research areas includes: (1) the design, deployment, and governance of recommender systems for fediverse platforms such as Mastodon; (2) human-quantum computer interactions and the applications of quantum computing/algorithms in social science settings, and; (3) making sense of how Ukrainians use online communities for advocacy, resource sharing, and resilience building. Other research interests of his include content moderation and technology policy/law.
Outside of work and school, Joshua likes to play tabletop games, cook, hike, socialize with friends and family, and spend time with his four cats -- Jessie, Jackie, Jamie, and Jennie!
