The word “advocacy” raises a number of agonizing professional and ethical questions for some journalists, but in the age of information hyper flows the lines between journalism, advocacy and activism have blurred. Who is a journalist and who is an advocate? Is this a false dichotomy? Join us for a conversation on the boundaries and possibilities of journalism and advocacy.

Panelists:

Nathan Schneider is visiting assistant professor of media studies at CMCI and a reporter who writes about religion, technology and resistance. He is the author of two books, God in Proof: The Story of a Search from the Ancients to the Internet and Thank You, Anarchy: Notes from the Occupy Apocalypse, both published by University of California Press. His articles have appeared in Vice; The Chronicle of Higher Education, The New Republic, Harper’s Magazine, The Nation, The Catholic Worker, Religion Dispatches and other outlets. He co-founded the news website Waging Nonviolence and helped relaunch the online literary magazine Killing the Buddha.

Patrick Ferrucci is an assistant professor in Journalism at CMCI. His research focuses on areas of media sociology, specifically how economics and technology impact news-production and information-sharing processes. His current project examines role conceptions in digital journalism and information sharing, particularly the connection between digital journalism and advocacy. He also spent eight years as a professional journalist, with his work appearing in numerous print, magazine and online publications.

Wendy Norris is a CMCI doctoral student and teaching assistant. Her research focuses on the intersections of collective intelligence and digital journalism. She has been awarded journalism fellowships from Stanford University, the University of California Berkeley, University of Southern California and City University of New York. She is a former investigative reporter/editor who covered the Holy Trinity of news beats: Politics, sex and religion. More recently, she is the Founder and CEO of Tekhne, a consulting collaborative that specializes in media software project management, data storytelling and design thinking methods.
