PhET Interactive Simulations is seeking an undergraduate student Video and Design Production Intern to help shape how PhET tells its story, grows its community of supporters, and reaches new audiences for our free science and math simulations used by tens of millions of students worldwide. With video quickly becoming the primary format teachers and students use to discover content online, this role will support the creation of short-form and long-form video that brings PhET's simulations to life for the intended audience. Additionally, the intern will also produce supporting static graphics and imagery for PhET's social media and marketing efforts. This paid internship provides hands-on experience in video production, social media content creation, educational storytelling, visual design, and digital communications within a research-based nonprofit organization.
The intern will work closely with PhET staff to plan, capture, edit, and publish multimedia content across PhET's channels, building a portfolio of real-world work.
Job Duties:
- Video planning and production: Plan, produce, edit, deliver, and organize multi-channel video content and assets for each platform and team.
- Capture: Shoot photos and short videos of behind-the-scenes activity, simulations in action, events, teacher testimonials, and other related content; with attention to framing, lighting, and storytelling.
- Editing and post-production: Apply motion graphics, captions, transitions, and sound design to elevate video quality and maintain a consistent visual identity across all channels.
- Graphic design: Design supporting static assets for social media and marketing including graphics, infographics, social posts, event flyers, and edited photos.
- Simulation storytelling: Create screen-recorded walkthroughs, explainers, and short clips that showcase PhET simulations in compelling ways.
- Content strategy and collaboration: Work with PhET staff to develop a video-first content strategy focused on three goals: growing PhET's audience, increasing educator engagement, and reaching new/early career teachers. Help build and maintain a content calendar to keep video output consistent and strategic.
- Social publishing: Plan, create, and publish content across PhET's social channels (Facebook, TikTok, Twitter/X, Instagram, BlueSky, YouTube, etc.) in collaboration with the social media team.
- Brainstorming and pitching: Stay current with emerging trends in the educator community. Brainstorm and pitch concepts, ideas, and campaign plans that resonate with teachers and STEM advocates.
- Analytics and reporting: Track performance metrics across YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and other platforms; report on what's working and suggest improvements.
Applicant Requirements:
- Must be a full-time undergraduate student at the University of Colorado Boulder
- Intermediate level experience with video editing software (ex. Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects)
- Familiarity with the video specification and content styles of major social platforms (YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, X)

- Comfort capturing photo and video content with attention to quality and storytelling
- Effective time-management skills and the ability to work independently as well as on a team
