Supporting our community
June 2, 2025
Dear CU Boulder community,
Yesterday’s terrorist attack in downtown Boulder was a senseless and horrific act of violence perpetrated against innocent individuals who gather weekly to bring attention to the ongoing plight of the hostages still being held in Gaza—those alive and those lost. I extend my sympathy to all of the victims and those impacted by yesterday’s abhorrent incident.
I condemn the attack in the strongest terms. Violence has no place in our community. I have no tolerance for any form of hate, including antisemitism. I appreciate the immediate action taken by the city of Boulder’s first responders, who quickly cared for the injured and swiftly took the suspect into custody before more harm could be done. Though this incident occurred downtown, we at CU Boulder must remain committed to the safety of all members of our campus community, including our Jewish members in the face of ongoing and increasing antisemitism. Any kind of hate has no place in Boulder or at CU.
I encourage anyone in our community—students, staff and faculty—who were impacted by this tragic incident to reach out to campus counseling and support resources if they need to talk with someone.
- Students can contact the 24-hour line for CAPS (Counseling and Psychiatric Services), AcademicLiveCare or the Office of Victim Assistance (OVA).
- Faculty and staff can also contact the Office of Victim Assistance (OVA) and/or FSAP (Faculty Staff and Assistance Program).
- Free and confidential mental health help is available 24/7 by calling or texting 988 or by visiting 988lifeline.org.
- More information can be found in this listing of campus support resources.
This is an especially difficult time, and I encourage all of us to approach the situation with sensitivity and to show care for each other’s emotional well-being. Our campus community is resilient and during times of tragedy, we always come together to support one another. We will continue to be there for our community members and for our partners in the city and the county.
Sincerely,
Justin Schwartz
Chancellor
