A travel experience that prepared me for the Global Engineering RAP is when I went on a school sponsored trip to Spain with my Spanish class to be immersed in Spanish Culture and language and elevate my language skills. This gave me a greater understanding and appreciation of why I was spending my time learning Spanish, how the skills I was practicing in the classroom could transfer to the real world and help me broaden my own world and perspective. Another example of this is when my family traveled to Russia, Israel, and several countries in central Europe. My mom is a Russian Jew and these experiences allowed my whole family to feel closer to their cultural roots by going to the places my mom and her family lived in both Russia and Israel, and recognize how these environments shaped and changed my family. I could see how these countries' cultures personally shaped my family and our beliefs and actions. Traveling to the other central European countries gave me a healthy appreciation of how these places that had a lot of cultural and linguistic overlap still had a distinct identity with norms, practices, and beliefs that informed how the individuals within the countries chose to shape their own lives. To me, all of these experiences demonstrated the importance of understanding how people differentiate themselves from other groups and being able to acknowledge why and what people value in their own lives.
The person I would want to live down the hall from me is someone who is open minded and who has different lived experiences from me. I think it’s important to have people you can relate to and who are similar in personality to you to an extent, but also to have others who are quite different and who you can learn and expand your worldview from. A dorm that mimics the real world where people with different beliefs and goals would prepare me and others living within the dorm to meet people who have different points of view on the same level. With this, I think someone that is non judgemental to different ways of living is also needed, as people who have different levels of extroversion, academic load, and interests are going to be doing drastically different things at times, and you have to be okay with that. I would like to share a living space with someone who is considerate of the people they are living next to, personable, and conscientious. All these traits are necessary for working through disagreements, with each side being able to see the reasoning of the other, and having the ability to translate that into a reasonable solution for everyone.
Global awareness and the ability to understand that different communities have different needs to be met based on their own values and traditions is incredibly important as a modern engineer. I think that the Global RAP’s goal of instilling linguistic and cultural fluency is a great step to take towards this goal. I hope to work in the energy industry where I can have a positive impact on the world around me, and in a world where international business and global trade dependence is more prevalent than ever, being able to connect and understand other people’s needs is crucial. Changing a community for the better isn’t possible unless you really grasp what matters to the people living within the area and what even caused the issues you are solving to come about in the first place. This is why I’m interested in the lessons that the Global RAP supports, such as giving more people oriented perspectives on different solutions. I plan to contribute personally to the RAP by being an active member of the community by attending community events, classes, and any other commitments that are in the RAP. I am excited to be an active member of such a diverse community that is looking to do good and want to contribute my all to the projects and events in the Global RAP.
