Growing up with family in Central America I spent a lot of time traveling all around the country of Costa Rica experiencing the culture and trying the language. Then recently, after finishing my junior year of highschool and my french 5 class I wanted to experience and try studying and practicing this language on my own. I planned a trip and flew to France alone spending 4 days in Paris and 2 in Nice practicing and learning the language and the culture.
The person I would want living down the hall from me would be someone that is open to discussion in all areas and topics, from our personal lives all the way to academic ideas. I would want someone that is creative and helpful, as I have learned to value teamwork during my four years on our high school robotics team, and believe I’d be able to make good friendships with these people, whom I’d “mesh” with both emotionally and intellectually. It would be great to connect with another student who shares similar interests, as we could help each other with projects and classwork. Additionally, I would like to learn about different cultures and meet students from different areas as I have never lived outside Connecticut, so a diverse population of students in Global Engineering RAP would be both engaging and beneficial.
The chance to be a part of the Global Engineering RAP is something that truly excites me. My goal in life has always been to make a positive impact on our society, not only locally in my state or country, but globally as well, which is an invaluable opportunity offered by this program. I want to be a part of a group that shares a drive to always put in more than what is simply asked of them, and to work because they truly believe in their goals. The RAP would allow me to surround myself with other like-minded, driven students that are serious about making a difference in the world, and are serious about putting in the effort to do so. Global Engineering RAP would help me grow as a person and an engineer by exposing me to people of different backgrounds and cultures. In my experience, I’ve learned the most and gained the most insight from those who come from different places, with completely different upbringings and perspectives than myself and RAP would offer me more of these opportunities to diversify my thinking, and by extension, the ideas I approach problems with.
In the small community of my high school robotics team, I’ve learned how to work through and support my friends, not only through great engineering challenges, but personally too. Because of our close-knit nature, our personal lives constantly overlap and we’ve experienced and overcome tragedies together. If I am accepted to the RAP I will personally contribute to the community by supporting and listening to those around me, so that we may grow as a community both intellectually and emotionally.
