A couple years ago I traveled to Israel for two weeks; and what I saw there I will never forget. In the news you hear of Israel as a country constantly in conflict, with Arabs and Jews each claiming the same piece of land for different parts of their history. When you go there you see the opposite. These two different communities, in a home of three major religions, living next to each other in peace, enjoying each other's company and culture and growing off of one another. I flew into Tel Aviv, alive with modern infrastructure beyond what I had experienced in many other places. I visited Jerusalem, where old infrastructure still stood and old communities continued to thrive. I want to perpetuate that. Coexistence and vibrant life in the middle of a desert. That is what I want and I think that the Global Engineering RAP can help me get there.
The engineering RAP that I am hoping to be a part of is one that is accepting and supportive of everyone within it. That means that the people would be kind and accommodating bringing their own life and unique backgrounds to the building so that we all can grow off of each other while we learn. I would love to walk down the hall this fall and meet a mechanical engineer named Alex, or Joaquin, or Grace, and discuss with them my ideas on advanced material development and how it could be applied to current and future infrastructure. A student who can also be a friend, who I can also talk to when I am having a rough day and who knows they can talk to me. Someone who I can build a community with.
I think that being in an engineering RAP will allow me to see more ways that my studies can apply to the world. I hope that it will open up internship opportunities and routes to the workforce that would not be as readily available otherwise. More importantly however, I hope that by becoming a part of this community I help the global community. My main motivation for my field is the fight to slow global warming. I think that the best way to do that is through research in my engineering field. By becoming a part of the Global Engineering RAP this year I will be able to build a strong foundation for my learning, refine my goals through the thoughts and ideas of those around me, and overall have a strong first year at Boulder that can propel me into the next ones.
