I have been fortunate enough to have had both international and domestic travel experience in my life. During my years in elementary school, I was able to travel outside of my home state of Colorado to Florida, Arizona, South Dakota, and Hawaii. I believe these experiences are what initially instilled in me a love for travel. Later, my parents took me on international vacations including to Iceland, the United Kingdom, and Norway. I have loved being able to experience new cultures and learn about the history of these countries.
One of the hopes I have for my future is that I will obtain future travel experience. I also hope to engage in charitable travel to developing countries. I believe the cultural knowledge I have obtained has prepared me for the Global Engineering RAP because it has provided with more background experience for learning how to better the world.
I walk out of my dorm room and down the hall to knock on the door of the person that lives there. She answers with a smile on her face and invites me in. Her room smells like the vanilla scented candle that is burning on her desk. The room is brightened by the light from her window. Her wall is covered with pictures of her friends from high school, family vacations, and her dogs. These are accompanied by a floral-patterned calendar where she has planned out the entire month of October. The color of the comforter on her neatly made bed corresponds perfectly with the color of the rug on the floor and the tea lights hung from her bunk. The pristine state of her room is a nice contrast from the comfortable disorganization of my own. She sits on the bed and inquires why I have come.
I look toward her mini fridge which is covered in CU Boulder magnets. My hunger has distracted me from my studies, and I ran out of snacks in my room, so I ask what she has, knowing she keeps her snacks well stocked. She says that I can help myself to anything. I open the fridge. It has mini carrots, yogurt, salads, cheese, chocolate milk; anything a girl could want at snack time. On top of that, she keeps crackers, granola bars, and candy in her cabinet. I decide to take some yogurt, and I’m confident that I can get back to work.
She asks what I’m working on, and I tell her that it is a project for my biology class, which we take together. She is ahead of me on the project and asks if I need help with anything. This reminds me of a part of the project I was stuck on and I ask her a question that I had been wondering about concerning DNA replication. She also cannot remember the fact off the top of her head so she pulls out a notebook in which she has taken her perfectly printed notes inclusive of diagrams and color coding. I am amazed at the detail considering I could barely keep up with the professor in class and my notes were comparable to chicken scratch. She points out the part of her notes containing the information I wondered about. I take a picture so that I can copy it into my own.
I thank her and complement the quality of her notes. We talk for a few minutes before I head back to my dorm and make plans to get coffee before our next biology class.
I have always wanted my experiences in higher education to lead to me having a positive impact on the world. This dream in combination with my goals of becoming a biomedical engineer and a veterinarian make the Global Engineering RAP perfect for me.
I want to use the knowledge I gain in getting a Biomedical Engineering degree to improve the lives of animals when I become a veterinarian. I believe being part of the Global Engineering RAP will have a significant contribution in helping me reach these goals and more. I would be able to hold a bigger part in bettering the world and the lives of the people in it.
It would also allow me to meet like-minded students who also want to use their engineering education to benefit the world. I believe I could develop meaningful relationships with these people. Interacting with and meeting new student would have a positive impact on me personally and probably open me up to more social and service opportunities.
While being a part of the Global Engineering RAP would definitely contribute to my education, I hope that I would have a contribution to the residential community as well. I would work to continue my dedication towards academics and service. I would also do my best to promote diversity and inclusion through kindness and respect. By seeking out opportunities to better myself, I believe I will continue to have an impact on the community.
