An experience that has prepared me for the Global Engineering RAP was participating in a travel trip to Ireland and Scotland during my sophomore year of high school. This was my first time traveling outside of the country, plus traveling alone without any close family or friends with me. I was able to explore the history and culture of the U.K. while developing relationships with new people at the same time. The trip fueled my love for learning about new places and wanting to go on adventures. Furthermore, the experience was enlightening to me because it brought new perspectives about the types of culture and beliefs. These beliefs would contribute to the development of places. So being introduced to different global perspectives early on has made me able to look at problems in multifaceted ways.
The person living down the hall from me in the Global Engineering RAP would want to always try something new with me. I want to have a relationship with someone that pushes me outside of my comfort zone. Thus, I will grow as an individual and learn new things alongside someone. For example, I am a foodie and I don't mind trying new types of food. So, I would love a roommate down the hall to join me in different experiences of trying new food. In addition, while growing up I have been known to be quiet and introverted, so having someone that will take the time to get to know me is important. The person down the hall from me will want to do the simple things of having study groups and helping each other out whenever possible. I want the person living down the hall to have familiarity and not be strangers.
The possibility of being a member of the Global Engineering RAP at CU Boulder is important to me because it is a community that builds fundamental values. These values are needed to garner help for people all across the world. People within the Global Engineering RAP program at CU Boulder become well versed in global issues, while also being developed fluent culturally. I want to be a member to showcase these values and represent the well-rounded student that is formed at CU Boulder to other communities. The Global Engineering community will contribute to my training as an engineer because I will be able to achieve an all-around understanding of crucial technology to solve international problems. This can create a constant paradigm shift in the outlook of problems. I plan to contribute my experience of traveling abroad to connect to a deeper understanding of cultures and take on new perspectives to design advanced technology for the health care of cultures across the world.
