Sov gott or sleep well in English is something I grew up hearing from my father, who was born and raised in Sweden and immigrated to the US in 1998. Due to my Swedish heritage, I have been to the country twice over the course of my life. The most recent time was during the summer of 2017 when my family and I went to Sweden to visit family and to partake in the celebration of Midsommar. It is a holiday celebrating the summertime and takes place during the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. During the day of the celebration, we went to a park along with my dad’s childhood best friend, Staffon, and when we arrived the entire grassy area was filled with people singing and dancing around a large maypole covered in flowers, ribbons, and leaves. Despite the fact that I did not grow up bilingual, this cultural experience helped me better understand my roots and the traditions in which my father was raised in. Another abroad experience I have was travelling to London, England during the same summer. It was yet another unforgettable experience that opened my eyes to a culture other than my own. For instance, the scenery, architecture, and overall social feel were all incredibly fascinating and interesting. Despite the fact that those two nations are both European, and I don't have much experience in other regions of the world, my family and I plan to visit Costa Rica this upcoming summer. There, I hope to use and develop my Spanish language skills while also immersing myself in another culture. I feel that the travel experience that I have gained throughout my life and will have this summer has increased my global awareness and thus has prepared me for the global engineering RAP.
Down the hall from me, I imagine an individual with a similar passion for learning and bettering themselves. Whether the person finds interest in studying principles of mechanics or methods of improving waste mitigation strategies, they aspire to become a person capable of designing and building systems to better the world. I believe that foreign language is essentially a gateway into another culture, therefore the person I would want to live down the hall from would have a common fascination for foreign languages and cultures. They would also seek alterantive perspectives and points of views from those who are different in terms of backgrounds or beliefs to give them a better understanding of a problem and an overall greater awareness. Outside of the classroom I hope the individual is someone who enjoys exploring new places and connecting with the world around them through philanthropy and outdoor activities such as hiking or skiing.
I would like to be a member of the Global Engineering RAP because my family stretches across the world and I would love to have the opportunity to be in a program that has an emphasis on other cultures and languages to help solve impending global problems such as climate change. Because this is very much a global problem, meaning every single country in the world will be impacted by climate change one way or another, the solutions put forth need to be collaborative. Therefore, it is necessary to understand and empathize with those that we share a planet with in order to enact change, which I think this community will help me improve upon. I believe that the intersection of engineering, sustainability, and global awareness is very important in helping to slow and ultimately stop this process until humans are able to live in harmony with the natural world. I personally plan to contribute to the residential community by working together with my fellow classmates to learn more about engineered systems such as energy, water supply, buildings, and transportation, and also improving my abilities to communicate with those in Spanish.
