Although I have not had as many opportunities to travel abroad as I would like, my limited travels inside and outside the United States have given me an interest in the world as a whole and how engineering affects that world. A few summers ago I got the opportunity to visit Mexico. I’ve always had an interest in learning languages and improving my ability to communicate but that experience accentuated a desire to learn more about the cultures and conditions existing in the world outside of my community. Since that time, I have worked to improve my communication skills and to learn more within the engineering community. I recently had the opportunity to compete in the Denver regional FRC competition with many amazing teams and learn more about their community outreach. I also plan to attend the international competition held in Houston Texas in late April. My experiences traveling and competing with FRC have given me a broader perspective on the world and how we can cross the barriers that exist to help each other as humans.
If I close my eyes and imagine my future, I imagine a life spent with like-minded people. That’s not to say I don’t want to meet a diverse group of people who approach problems from different angles, by like-minded I mean people who are driven to achieve their dreams whatever they may be. On that note, I would say my ideal down-the-hall neighbor would be someone who is hardworking and challenges me to work harder myself. Aside from that, I would be ecstatic to live near anyone who broadens my horizons and offers a new perspective on the world.
I want to be a member of the Global Engineering RAP because I would like to be a part of a community that works together on a global scale to address issues in the world. I believe a large part of being an effective engineer is to look beyond the technical part of engineering and further into how it affects the world we live in. This RAP will, I believe, contribute to my training as an engineer by providing a global context for engineering as a profession. I plan to contribute to the community by participating in coursework and extracurricular activities to contribute to the Residential Academic Program. I also will provide a perspective based on my background and hope to encounter other perspectives that challenge mine to consider more than I currently do.
