Who I am has been greatly influenced by my experiences with travel and the people I have met from every corner of the world. With half of my family in Croatia and a range of people from many different countries living in our two-family house throughout the years, I have grown into a person who seeks out a diverse environment. With this came a drive to explore new countries and meet new people to hear as many stories as I can. That is why, when I learned about Children’s International Summer Village (CISV), I took the first chance I could to travel abroad.

CISV is an organization dedicated to creating a better and more peaceful world by fostering international friendships among young people. The goal is that these kids grow into adults that better understand and accept others of different cultures. Over my six years in CISV, I have traveled to three international camps where I have made friends with people from dozens of countries. At these camps, I lived for nearly a month without access to my phone, the internet, or even the ability to write and receive letters from home. I was given the opportunity to completely immerse myself in this diverse group of individuals from every corner of the world. We worked together on community service projects, engaged in thoughtful conversations, and had lots of fun. We learned about the differences between our countries, but also all that we had in common.

In recent years, I have taken on a leadership role in Cincinnati’s chapter of CISV, which involves planning camps and local service projects in our community. During the pandemic, a partner and I led an international pen pal campaign involving over 100 people from 22 countries.

I have a strong commitment to connecting people from all over the world. I want everybody to get the chance to experience what I have been able to in CISV and to learn how eye-opening it is to have thoughtful conversations with people from completely different backgrounds. I truly believe that a more peaceful world is in sight if we teach love and acceptance of other cultures to our kids and demonstrate that acceptance to one another. Through meeting all of these people from other countries, and being able to connect with them through meaningful activities, I have had many experiences to prepare me to learn from and contribute to the Global Engineering RAP.
I would like to live down the hall from somebody who is curious about the world and as excited to explore it as I am. This neighbor may come from a different background and have a different perspective on a variety of issues, but would share my passion for engineering. We would sometimes bounce ideas off each other and sometimes study together to help each other better understand the content. To balance out the school work, I would love to live near someone who is up for spontaneous hikes and willing to be my travel buddy. I am a very social person who loves meeting new people, so I hope to be surrounded by other people who are also excited to get to know each other and form a strong community.
My favorite part of engineering has always been the collaborative nature of the field. In highschool, I thoroughly enjoyed hands-on team projects in my engineering course and Biology Meets Engineering summer program because I loved being part of the process where different team member’s ideas come together into a cohesive project. I am excited by the idea of working with people in a variety of different areas of engineering in the Global Engineering RAP on projects around the world. I think the chance to hear different perspectives and gain this global experience will better prepare me to work on a team as an engineer.

Through many years of participation and leadership in Children’s International Summer Village (CISV), I have experienced the value of making meaningful connections with others of different backgrounds and the joy of traveling to satisfy my curiosity about the world. This desire for global collaboration and an international college experience is why I want to be a member of the Global Engineering RAP. Furthermore, I am excited about the hands-on study abroad experiences to further my education, not only as an engineer, but also as an individual.

Most importantly, I want to help build a community of open-minded people who are also passionate about exploring the world and engineering for the benefit of others. To address climate change and other challenges we face, the world needs engineers who will collaborate to develop innovative solutions. I look forward to studying and working with others of different viewpoints, but a common desire to build a better world. I am excited to contribute to the RAP by serving as an active member of the community, helping to plan activities, and being a supportive friend. Additionally, I look forward to planning and attending the language night dinners to have a good time with friends while we help each other improve our second language skills. I want to be the kind of person people know that they can come to for support, or to have a last minute study session. Finally, I also would love to help organize projects and special events for the RAP as I have done with my local chapter of CISV.
