While I have not had a broad range of traveling experience, I was lucky enough to get to travel to Morocco when I was in elementary school. That trip is what sparked my interest in wanting to travel and learn about different cultures. This interest will then translate well into me being in the Global Engineering RAP as the entire program is based on taking one’s major and applying it outside of the boundaries in the US that people normally think of using their skills in. An additional benefit to my time in Morocco is that my family was there visiting my aunt who lived in the country at that time. As such, although we still visited several of the main tourist attractions, I was also able to get a more immersive experience as opposed to being limited to an itinerary off of a travel guide. Staying in a normal residential neighborhood, and even having a mosque just down the block from the house, allowed me to see how a place across the world from my home can blend both very different and very similar aspects of life to what I am used to. This especially has prepared me for the RAP as it highlighted the importance of taking into consideration the differences that exist between various places in the world when working on any form of innovative technology.
I would want the person living down the hall from me to be someone who I can have positive interactions with both academically and socially. They would be someone who is willing to try new things and go out of their comfort zone, both if someone else were to come up with an idea, and even being a person who comes up with ways to expand their horizons on their own. This would allow both of us to get the most out of living in the same hall of the RAP. These qualities would be especially good in the Global Engineering program as being surrounded by people who are willing to reach outside of the box would ensure that those in the program get the most out of being in it. In addition to the willingness to try new things outside of an academic setting, I would also want my hallmate to be someone who is open to collaborating when it comes to furthering our education. Since everyone in the RAP will be engineering students, and most of us will be in our first years, there will be a lot of overlap in the classes that we are taking. As such, when different people inevitably struggle with different subjects, those who are living in the hall can work together to help those who need it, and even to further everyone's understanding of the subject material by looking at it from various points of view. In addition to the social and academic collaboration, it would just be nice to have a hallmate who shares my passion for looking beyond the country that I live in.
I want to be a member of the Global Engineering RAP because I have always had an interest in exploring different cultures and learning languages. The program will be a good opportunity for me to further that interest by looking at my degree through a global scale. The community will contribute to my training as an engineer because it will allow me to look at how my knowledge and skills might be implemented in the professional world. Although my intended degree of engineering physics does not tie into global outreach as much as other areas of engineering, there are still many opportunities to implement the abilities that I will gain throughout my college years outside of the US, and I expect this program would help me find and explore those opportunities. I plan to contribute to the community by getting involved in any events that I can that connect to my major or even just spark my interest outside of what curriculum I might be taking at the time academically.
