This past summer, I traveled to the British Virgin Islands for a liveaboard experience on a catamaran. Along with the islands' beauty, I learned many valuable skills during my three weeks there. The specific company I chose to go with highly valued community service, so venturing into the 'non-resort' places on the islands is an experience I hold dear. The culture on those islands is entirely different, and having a place in their community was such a joyful experience. Playing sports with the kids was my favorite way to spend free time because everyone was happy based on fun and not worldly things. Besides my trip's culture and service activities, I learned how to scuba dive for marine conservation and protection purposes. Naturalist dives were my absolute favorite because I had the opportunity to study and log different types of fish and the areas they live in. Being a part of the effort to preserve the ocean's beauty inspired me to think of the little things that hurt the sea, not just plastic bottles and netting and I am so excited to be traveling back this summer to continue helping the marine life.
The person that lives down the hall should be a driven engineer that believes community builds the path towards success. They need to have passion for their major but benefit other countries and cultures, not just for their benefit. I should be able to shout down the hall if I approach a problem and have access to the community around me to help find a solution. It does not matter the race, gender, or sexuality of the person down the hall because the community of global engineers should be accepting of every culture and every viewpoint. I want to be able to share my ideas and passions with them, and turn them into an asset that will have a global effect.
I want to be a part of the global engineering RAP because I strongly believe that a large part of engineering is within community. I want to surround myself with a support group that truthfully cares about building each other up, but also recognizes that individualism is key to being part of a team. Being involved in this community will better me as an engineer due to the strong work ethic of those surrounding, which will encourage me to be the best version of myself. Personally, I will contribute my passion for travel and appreciation of cultures to this residential community. I will be part of something bigger tham myself; a community of driven individuals that are all trying to accomplish the same goal with similar passions.
