I have a proven track record that includes working with local communities outside of my own and embracing cultural fluency. During several separate week-long trips to an orphanage in Mexico called “Casa de la Esperanza”, I made good friends with many of the kids living in the orphanage and collaborated with the founders to help build a K-6 school and community center. Additionally, I have a family connection to China through my adopted younger brother. I would like to support and encourage more diversity in the student body at CU Boulder. I would also like to go beyond what is required of me so that I can help create deep and real global change.
The person living down the hall from me has a different cultural, ethnic, racial, LGBTQIA+, or other background than my own. They will introduce me to new food and help me understand the nuances and complexities of languages and communities other than my own. The person down the hall will invite me to advocate with them for more social recognition about structural, cultural, ethnic, racial or LGBTQIA+ specific issues in modern, global society.
I want to be placed in a residential and scholastic environment where I can use my engineering skills and enhance my knowledge of inequality to help dismantle systemic poverty and injustice in the world. I want to find and collaborate with other students at the Global Engineering RAP to develop evidence-driven collection and solution strategies. This will bring us all closer to a world where everyone can live with dignity and prosperity.
