As I think back to this past summer, when my family decided to visit Mexico to see family after the pandemic was finally slowing down, I think about how much it changed my mindset about how I view the world. Although I have never traveled overseas, I frequently visit Mexico two or three times a year. Through these travels, I have seen the hardships and difficulties others face when there is a lack of nourishment and shelter and how it can impact thousands of people. Thanks to these travels, especially last year after the pandemic, I have shifted my mindset to see what others may need to have better lives. I believe that through these travels, I have seen and prepared myself to see struggling individuals, and they have helped me come up with some solutions to problems I have seen in other, poorer counties.
As I think about college and the people I want to have by my side during the journey, three words come to mind: trustworthy, understanding, and respectful. First, I want someone reliable who I can talk to about my day and feel confident that they will help me by being honest and trustful with me. Additionally, I want someone who is understanding. I hope the person living down the hall from me will understand that we all have different needs and have different experiences. I hope they can understand that and help accommodate other people's needs. Finally, I hope they are not only understanding but respectful. In a place like a college, there will be many different people of a different races, gender, sexual orientation, etc., and I hope that they can accept me and any other person and not judge them. As someone from a community of primary minorities, I have seen and experienced many people's struggles and hardships. As I prepare to attend college, I hope that the people I am surrounded by will be as open-minded and accepting as I am.
I believe that the Global Engineering RAP would be essential to help me become the leader I want to be and help train me to be an engineer who understands his role in his larger community. Through the Global Engineering RAP, I would be able to see real-world scenarios of how engineers can contribute to third-world countries that don't get the help they need. I believe this would help me as an engineer and show me how to use my knowledge and resources to help others. I hope to bring my past experiences from my community and ideas from my travels in Mexico. I hope to contribute new ideas or put in place ideas I've had of how to help others but didn't have the resources or education to do so. I believe that the Global Engineering RAP would help me understand my role as an engineer better and help teach me how to use my education and skills as a resource to help others in need.
