My entire extended family lives in Denmark, and I visit every summer. I've grown up speaking Danish at home and while I’m there I get to practice my language skills even more.

My family has occasionally combined our trips to Denmark with weeklong stops in other European countries. To be specific, I have visited England, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain in recent years. These experiences have given me a greater outlook on differences between countries and have made me value variances in culture even more.

I’ve been taking Spanish courses since I was in kindergarten. Throughout elementary school, I took them before and after school. Once I got to eighth grade, I was able to start taking classes in school and I have taken them ever since. Currently, I am enrolled in AP Spanish. I've visited Spain twice with my family where I got to speak with locals and gain a better understanding of the language. I also went on a school trip to Tijuana in Mexico, where we spent a week building a house for a low-income family. Throughout the process, I was able to speak to the family and hear the effect our actions would have on their family’s future. My hope is to continue to have a positive impact on people’s lives.
I would want to live down the hall from a classmate who shares the same goals as me. We should be able to work together and help each other succeed. If they're staying up late to do some last-minute studying for a test, I would bring them a coffee. If I'm feeling a little bored over a long weekend, they would bring over a board game to help pass the time. We would walk to our shared classes together, and form a study group for difficult classes.
I think it will be greatly beneficial to live amongst people with corresponding aspirations in terms of having a global impact. Since many of the students will be taking similar, if not the same, courses as me, we can work together on any difficult assignments and projects. After attending an information session at the CU Boulder Admitted Student Day, I learned that global engineering will provide a chance for me to focus on improving the world’s conditions, instead of just thinking on a smaller and more local scale. I'll be able to improve my critical thinking by looking for solutions to widespread issues. The U.S. is often referred to as a melting pot. The Global Engineering RAP is a melting pot within the melting pot. I look forward to learning from people from other cultural backgrounds and sharing my unique perspectives and experiences with them. Among other things, I hope to continue utilizing my Spanish by practicing with fellow residents. Additionally, I can teach classmates how to speak some Danish if they're curious and want to learn. Throughout high school I have been generous with my time, always being available to help my friends with course work and often acting as informal tutor in STEM classes. I intend to bring the same supportive and collaborative spirit to the Global Engineering RAP and cannot wait to contribute to the program. Together, other members and I can help each other grow and hopefully do something good for the world at large in the process.
