By growing up in the city my entire life has been spent surrounded by new technologies that I consider necessary for my everyday life. Although, on a trip to Hawaii, I had the opportunity to experience some of the vast culture available on the island of Maui, through which I gained an appreciation for the ability to not be reliant on technology as much as we, as a society, are now. While exploring the island we stumbled upon a small chicken shack called Huli Huli Chicken. In this hut, there was just an open flame grill, nothing fancy like the multi-thousand dollar kitchens of today. Yet, the food was leagues above anything I had eaten prior. This showed me that a person doesn’t need a thousand-dollar machine to solve a problem, just the tools and techniques to create solutions. When I look towards other countries where the general solution was just to give an expensive piece of technology and leave there seems to be a trail of failures. No one had thought outside of the box to assist in granting the communities the techniques to create solutions, which is the point of learning engineering in my opinion. Learning to solve problems by giving people the power to create solutions.
Within the RAP dorms, I want to live down the hall from people who are passionate about learning, yet able to enjoy themselves. I would love to have the opportunity to freely enter each other's rooms to hang out or get help with homework problems we’re struggling with. I would like this person to have different goals, perspectives, and interests than me. I want to consider more perspectives when solving problems, doing this requires me to diversify those to whom I am close, which I feel the RAP will allow me to do. Individuals with different ideas will allow me to consider options I would not have thought of, or maybe flaws within my own solutions might appear that I did not see. Different interests will drive me out of my comfort zone to try something new and see if there are new activities I will enjoy, which I hope will be others' views towards my passions and interest. When it comes to building a better world for everyone on earth, the voices of many need to be heard, thus by having individuals with differences everyone can grow together.
After having talked with Laura, I was able to get a more full picture of the engineering RAP. The community surrounding the RAP sounds really tailored to helping freshmen through their first year of college while making lasting connections with people looking to pursue engineering. The group making up this community sounds diverse and accepting which I feel will help all of us settle into this new college lifestyle away from our parents. As everyone will bring their own perspective to the table I hope to be able to learn from all of them gaining insights from those around me with different ideas making me think of paths less traveled. I feel like it will be a very important life skill to develop, allowing me to think of other possibilities in the future of my career. As a person, I would like to use the RAP as a chance to grow my understanding of others, and also learn how to help others. I find that when it comes to helping others I am really strong when it comes to technology, with the RAP’s resources in mind I might be able to help others learn how to use the resources to their advantage. Within the RAP I hope to be a leader helping others think critically about questions, but also promoting a healthy first year of college life.
