My parents have always taken my brothers and I on extensive, sometimes boring road trips around the country. While I haven't always enjoyed the long car rides, close quarters to my siblings, and gas station stops, the trips have been incredible opportunities to see more of the world around me while learning more about it. Traveling is something that I have always and without a doubt will always be interested in. How can you make any assumptions or know anything about the world without seeing it? Seeing pictures is never anything like in person, and reading books never measures up to the real experience. My parents love the mountains, and as a result I have spent a lot of time in the Appalachians, hiking, rafting, and driving past views that make your stomach drop. Our travel is typically outdoor geared, meaning that the natural landscape tends to outweigh other attractions when picking locations. I have not traveled as much as I would like, and hope to participate in more extensive travel during college. The main thing that travel so far into my life has done to prepare me, is simply instilling the desire for more of it. I am only entering the beginning of the adventures that I will take in my lifetime, and hope to use the knowledge of pasts trips, whilst learning new things to see as much of the world as I can, and then give back to it.
I would want all kinds of people living down the hall from me in the Global Engineering RAP, because a mix of talents and personalities is always interesting and a good way to learn. That being said, if I had to highlight the qualities of an ideal individual to share living space with it would be someone that is both similar and different to myself. I have found that some of my best friendships are those that come from people with strikingly different personalities than myself, because it creates an opportunity to balance each other's flaws, and talents. Having someone around that is a morning person would be interesting because then we would have some time to ourselves and operate different times of the day. Small differences like that are examples of the differences that create the balance between people. On the other hand, certain similarities are also good. Personally I am incredibly interested in the major I have chosen, and I want to do well. Being surrounded by other people that share in that drive, and passion would promote good work ethic and an environment that motivates, rather than deters that hard work. I would like for the people around me to be interesting, cultured, and full of knowledge that I can learn from, while sharing those basic principles of community, hard work, and kindness; because above all, sharing a space with people that are kind is the most important thing to me.
In a career, technical skills alone are not enough. While they are certainly beneficial and necessary without a bigger purpose and good communication those skills will be wasted in terms of greater potential. Why does someone become a teacher, a plumber, a doctor, or an engineer? For every person it varies, but essentially many people try to follow the path best suited for them. When finding the path best suited for myself there were, and still are, many things to consider. The hopes and passions that I have as well as the plausibility of my doing any one particular thing have all helped with those decisions, but those things alone are not the only factors. Helping other people is something that is deeply rooted in me. No matter the scale, whether it be community service or getting the door for someone, helping others is one of the only things that has completely and absolutely fulfilled me. Whatever I do, wherever, and however I do it, it is crucial to me that it my actions are beneficial to those around me, and society itself. I have been incredibly blessed throughout my life, so to act as though I somehow deserve anything I have been given over anyone else would be ridiculous. Instead, I want to use every single opportunity that I am given for the eventual betterment of the world around me. Being in a community of others who place value on helping to improve the state of others sounds amazing, and I would love not only to be part of it, but to contribute that same attitude in return to those around me. No act of service is without benefit, no matter how meaningless or small it may seem. I want to help those living around me. If there is someone that is homesick, heartbroken, or generally upset I want to be a friend they can turn to, and a shoulder they can cry on. If there is someone that just needs some extra support and encouragement working on something, I plan on lending that enthusiasm because that is what builds solid connections, and a thriving community as a whole. I just want to give back in my life through every aspect of it, and this seems like an incredible opportunity to continue doing that.
