My family has had the privilege to travel during summer breaks before covid. During these experiences, it has always been eye-opening just to see how different places have developed. On one of our trips to China, we visited our old family home. The street was cracked and had vegetation growing through, and the home itself had wooden shutters and metal bars instead of windows. Living in America has given me a fine appreciation for infrastructure. Buildings with water heaters, air conditioning. Powerlines that are buried underground. Streets that can actually fit a car going in each direction. Our world is built upon this infrastructure and seeing places of the world missing it spurred a realization in myself. Although I don't know exactly how I want to contribute to society and my community, I want to be similar to infrastructure in the way that it builds people up, and gives them a foundation to stand on. The environment we grow up in determines much of our success as individuals and I want to be someone who improves that environment, not just for Americans but for people all over the world.
This may be a poor way to describe this person, but I wish for someone leagues smarter than me. Personally, I think one of the best ways to improve yourself as a person, is to surround yourself with those who you admire and aspire to be similar to. Through my childhood, this has been my parents, teachers, mentors, and peers. I want nothing more than to experience and share the experience of higher education with those who push me to think in ways I perhaps haven't. Of course, I hope to be this person for others as well, after all, a successful society is all about freeing up resources so that each individual can provide as much value as they can in the aspect of their mind that they are most confident with. Of course, this neighbor must also be kind, supportive, and possess other such supportive traits that are present in any friendship.
I have bought into the idea that the better off those around you are, the better off you will be. As your neighbors' lives improve, so will yours. As the world becomes a safer and more stable place to live, everyone's lives will improve, including my own. Ever since I realized this, I have always worked to help others. Whether teaching music theory or helping with math, I try to help others improve themselves. In the grand scheme of things, engineering seems to be the best way that I will be able to help others. Global Engineering could be my gateway to truly have a positive larger-scale impact on the world. As much as I love helping those in my community, I feel as I have hit a wall with the skills and expertise I currently possess. I must improve myself as an individual in order to improve the lives of others, and in turn, my own. It's all a cycle of improvement for all. I just want to do as much as I can.
