Every year, I take a trip to Chile to visit my family. Although I have lived in Colorado my whole life, my frequent visits to Chile make it feel like a second home. I have always noticed the plentiful cultural differences between the United States and Chile, but I have visited my family so much that this different culture simply feels like second nature.
Living at the intersection of two cultures has allowed me to be open to different perspectives and has changed how I view many issues. As a developing country, many people in Chile live in extreme poverty, and while my family there is more fortunate, they still live on surprisingly little. This has led me to appreciate the necessity of basic privileges such as clean water and consistent access to electricity that I might otherwise have taken for granted. Similarly, I have adopted many cultural norms that are present in Chile, such as the unique foods, different eating times, and even a unique political view that stems from Chile’s history of communism to extreme free market capitalism. I hope to take these unique perspectives that I have gained and contribute to Global Engineering RAP.

I would want someone who is respectful and committed to their studies to live down the hall. It would be great if this person doesn’t blast music that prevents me from studying or be loud while I am trying to sleep. I would love for this person to share the same interests as me in engineering and how things work so that we can talk in our free time. This person would possibly even take some of the same classes that I do, so that we can work through difficult subjects and help each other eventually come to an understanding. Furthermore, this person would be well educated, well rounded, and well informed about current events around the world. On top of being dedicated to wanting to change the world, I would want this person to have a good sense of humor and humility, so that I might enjoy working with them on a project and interacting with them on a daily basis.
I have always been interested in discussing challenging concepts with my peers. Whether it’s the improved efficiency of Tesla’s IPM-SynRM electric motor over conventional electric motors or the logistical nightmare that encapsulates the central 70 highway project in Denver, I enjoy talking through how things work. Global Engineering RAP would allow me to be surrounded by people who share the same interests as me and who share a passion for complex ideas. Similarly, I would love to be surrounded by people who really want to make a difference in this world by working within these interests to create something that has an impact.
Personally, I hope to bring a unique perspective to the residential community so that I can challenge my peers and contribute to a well-rounded group. With my ability to speak Spanish (my native language) and French, I hope to be able to communicate with many people and contribute to diversity within the community. Similarly, my Chilean heritage means I hold many cultural values that are somewhat unique, such as different foods, eating customs, living routines, and even political perspectives. Using these distinct cultural values, I hope to contribute to the diverse learning community as a member of Global Engineering RAP. Furthermore, I would love to share my joy for mountain biking with the members of the RAP community, to stay in shape and have something to do with friends when we are not studying.
