Growing up, my family would travel to Ecuador to visit relatives. We would go for most of, if not all of my summer vacation. At first, I did not want to go. I struggled with the language barrier and I struggled even more with the cultural barrier. However, I took a leap and decided that I would stay with my cousins for a few days away from my immediate family. We were out in a village in the mountains of Ecuador, a small village named Gutun. This was one of the best times of my life. Instead of staying home and watching TV like I used to, I spent my time playing soccer, milking cows, and losing to my uncles in ping pong. That time we spent together improved my Spanish substantially but it improved my ability to adapt to major change way more. After this experience, I not only liked trying new things, I searched for these opportunities. I know that my adaptation to new experiences and desire for new experiences have prepared me for the Global Engineering RAP.
When I think of my dream classmate and community member, I think of someone who is motivated, has set goals, and has individuality. The first two reasons go hand in hand. I think that if someone is motivated and has set goals, they will be a good influence for others and will motivate me to work harder towards my goals. My reasoning for individuality, however, almost seems to contradict this. I know college will be a big part of my and my classmate's lives but I do not think it should completely dominate someone to the point where they have no time to express themselves through other mediums. Throughout high school, I have seen my friend's grades stop them from making time to speak with their families and even to do things that they love. This has even stopped me from being there for my nephew's birth and I regret it. I think that with individuality, many of us will be able to destress and be ready whenever there is a big project or deadline for school.
Becoming a member of the Global Engineering RAP at CU Boulder will benefit me as I will be able to network and interact with other strong-willed individuals who want to work hard towards their careers. I believe it will be helpful to me through the relationships I develop with the other members. I plan to contribute to the residential community by being a friendly face and helping others when they are in need. I believe I will be helpful to other incoming members as I have taken AP calculus and physics 1 and 2. If anyone needs help with classes or figuring out problems I will do my best to help them.
