I do not have any notable travel or study abroad experiences. As a sophomore in high school, I was one of two students to be invited to attend an engineering trip to Europe. This trip was intended to take place around the United Kingdom, exploring its engineering wonders and taking tours of engineering facilities. Unfortunately, the trip’s itinerary fell through and never took place. Aside from that I do have some brief experiences in Mexico and Canada. While neither were directed towards engineering specifically, I did get to observe some of the architecture and design of foreign countries.
I understand that within the Global Engineering RAP, the idea is that all students are engineering majors or members of the College of Engineering. However, one of the big ideas is meeting new people. So, yes the student down the hall will be an engineer, but I want them to be the least like me as possible. I have always been drawn to diversity and different ideas. Through my parents and my Scouting background, I have always been taught to be reverent and respectful. The person I would hope to see down the hall isn't just another Asian male Creative Technology and Design major. They aren't Christian, they aren't from an Asain background, and they don't see the world of engineering through the computer side. Perhaps they're Hindu, or maybe they were born in France. Maybe we’ll have to speak to each other through a translator app on our phones. Maybe they'll teach me how to cook food from who knows where. The idea is that they expose me to a new perspective. I truly do believe in the value of diversity in any career field and that is why, especially in the Global Engineering RAP, I hope to meet other engineers who are nothing like me.

The reason I am interested in a place in the Global Engineering RAP is to pursue my higher vision. As an Eagle Scout and member of the Order of the Arrow, I have dedicated a significant amount of time thinking about a future in the service of others. As an engineer, my higher vision is to dedicate what I do to improve the communities of the world. A place in the Global Engineering RAP would equip me with many things. First, this community is one that already focuses on how we as a group can tackle world-changing problems. The higher vision for this RAP already parallels my vision for the future. Second, this RAP will no doubt have plenty of diversity. As a student and a Scout, I cannot stress enough the value I see in diversity. I am excited to find a place on campus where I can bounce ideas of a diverse group of engineers. This RAP provides me with that diverse space and allows me to grow and bond with fellow engineers through classes and events in the building. I recognize that the best way to understand the perspectives and ideas of diverse cultures is to grow and share with them, an experience I know this dorm can provide. As a person, I plan to bring just that to the dorm; perspectives, ideas, and cultures. I will personally take the extra step to help others, care for my peers, share my experiences and immerse myself in the adventure.
