I haven't been fortunate enough to have traveled very far outside the Midwest. The one time I have, I went to Vancouver, Canada for the Women's World Cup. While I was there, there were many fans from the U.S. as well as from all around the world. I got to try international cuisine and talk with Italian and Spanish and French football fans while going out to eat. That experience gave me a taste of what broadening your horizons looked like and the value of traveling and meeting people with different life experiences. Their views gave me a different perspective on my own experience and made me feel more connected to others outside my nationality. I think that what I learned from that trip instilled a desire in me to explore places and people outside my bubble and that passion would shine through in the Global Engineering RAP.
The person I would want to live down the hall from me would be curious. I'd want them to be someone who was always open to discussing ideas and exploring questions while remaining open-minded. If I were debating on what topic to write an essay on or pondering on some idea I discussed in class, I'd like to be able to feel safe to ask them for their opinion on it. I would want my peer to be not only willing but excited to have new experiences and meet new people. Anyone who finds value in growing and engaging with others is someone I would like to be around and I believe there'd be many of those people in the Global Engineering RAP.
One of my main extracurricular activities in high school was teaching coding to inner city school girls. By doing this, I learned how empowering education can be and how it can lift people from poverty. I've only held witness to poverty in St. Louis, but I know it is prevalent on a much larger scale globally. I hope by being apart of the Global Engineering RAP , I can be surrounded by people and resources that will teach me how to better educate others about engineering so that they can do better for themselves and their community. Additionally, I hope that I will become better aware of how my decisions as a computer scientist and engineer can affect others and adjust accordingly. Plus, I think it'd be really refreshing and exciting to be around people that are as compassionate and curious as myself. So, I think that the Global Engineering RAP would be a great fit for me and that I would be a dedicated and involved addition.
