Traveling to China allowed me to learn how to acclimate to an environment where I am not fluent in the language. While I was surrounded by family members that helped me to cross those communication barriers, it has prepared me to better adapt to wildly unfamiliar environments, and not allow my own limitations to stop me from learning about new cultures.
I would want someone who is willing to help. While they will obviously have their own schedule, knowing that I can call on them when I need without fear of judgement would be a comforting thought. In turn, I would also want them to comfortable calling on me for help whenever they need it as well.
Along that same idea, I would also want them to be open-minded and inclusive. You never know what kinds of people you meet and experiences you end up having, and it would be absolutely amazing if I could do those things with someone so close by.
I would also want them to have a good sense of humor. As most people do, I make friends with people by joking around with them; sometimes this also means that I say the wrong thing, and being able to relay my intentions with someone who has a similar sense of humor to mine makes it much less awkward for the both of us.
Additionally, I would also want for them to be more extroverted than I. I enjoy being around extroverted, generally energetic people, and spending time with them sometimes means exploring new things that I probably wouldn't have done on my own.
While this may the person that I want to live down the hall from, it doesn't mean that I only want the person I describe; I love meeting new people, and always find a way to get along with those around me.

I want to be a member of the Global Engineering RAP and CU Boulder because I feel that it is an opportunity for me to meet like-minded people, and witness engineering in action. Just like most people, I enjoy helping others, and would never turn down an opportunity to not only help others, but employ the ideas that I will learn throughout the year to real-world problems.
I am also interested in learning about other cultures, and while I am not terribly good at learning languages, I do not want to let that deter me from being exposed to new, unique experiences that could help me in the future. The language barrier will be the most challenging for me to overcome, but I believe that I will learn how to better communicate with others as a result, which can be a useful skill as an engineer.
I plan to be an active member of the community, as I hope others will be as well, by offering my help when needed to my peers within the community. I will offer my own insight and skills when needed, and apply for leadership roles when I can.
