For me personally, this is a bit of a difficult question to answer, as I have been living abroad for the majority of my life. I was born in Sweden, but consider myself bi-cultural, as I have dual citizenship with the United States.
But, I have actually lived in Asia for the majority of my life. Shifting countries ever since I was four, experiencing my childhood in Sweden, Korea, Japan and now Singapore. Connecting with the culture and the people who live in them has been at the forefront of my experiences in these countries, yet still going to international schools that wish to teach us peace and unity between people instead of division and racist behavior. These countries have been such an important part of my life as I believe that I would not be the same person that I am now if I had just lived in Sweden or the U.S. I tried to encircle myself within the society that I lived within - learning societal norms that I usually take for granted myself. I usually embrace these cultures, so that when going back to a place that is considered my home (Sweden), I am usually unsettled by my own country.
I just graduated from the United World College of South East Asia that wishes to “make education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and sustainable future.” We need to connect with one another to solve the modern issues that face our global atmosphere that encompasses our species, instead of falling back on false principles that pre-existed in a different world from previous generations. We need to innovate, solve social issues and use our knowledge to make a more sustainable earth for one another to live beside each other in harmony. Using my education from the University of Colorado Boulder, I hope to solve problems with my peers that exist at our very core within our civilization.
One of the biggest experiences that I received from high school was the opportunity to travel to rural Thailand, Chiangmai, to do service work for a primary school. I worked with my peers from all over the world to help build an extension and foundation to the school with concrete. I believe that is what the global engineering RAP is all about, helping with our knowledge to solve our sustainability goals bit by bit.
Our generation will bring the most change, using our apparent awareness and intellect to solve the apparent issue of solving our UN sustainability goals. I think that the University will allow me to connect with many people and share our experiences that help broaden our view of the world. Little by little, transforming our world for a feasible future for humanity by being active as global citizens.

I want to be able to connect with that person, building a close friendship during my time at the university. Hopefully, we have very similar interests and hobbies that allow us to connect with each other, though it is also important that we expose each other to new situations and activities that take us out of our comfort zone. I am quite into flying, more specifically gliders, which allows me to gain a sense of perspective and purpose towards the world - I want to show him the joys that I experience with this hobby, while at the same time experiencing some of their hobbies that I have never experienced before.
Meeting extraordinary people that are different from me is extremely important as well, sharing our experiences together. The people that I will meet will hopefully have the same level of ambition and energy for using their engineering skills for solutions to fix the problems that face our society. I would like them to be able to be creative and have the integrity to speak up and discuss constructively the problems that we need to solve as a group.
I am quite an outdoorsy person, wanting to get away from the city life and be surrounded with nature to truly understand how small we are in relative aspects - hopefully we will have the same interests to the outdoors and not just having our life surrounded with the stresses associated with being in university. Having the same outlook about life is something that would be great because it would help us both to relax and get away from it all.
Though many of these things are in relation to me, it is important to know that a completely opposite personality absolutely works. We need to understand the differences that we have, finding middle ground and still enjoying the university experience that we both will have.

I want to have a global impact on the world with my engineering degree. The RAP scheme will allow me to experience the stepping stones towards that goal in my life, connecting with other individuals to use our collective intellect to overcome obstacles in our way. I personally believe that this RAP community will allow me to gain unique skills that many will not experience; such as getting to know my peers, gaining good teamwork skills and improving my leadership skills so that I do not walk in blind when eventually entering the workforce. Before becoming an engineer, this program will allow me to support my peers with their technical skills and technological endeavours in order to solve problems together.
Realistic applications towards the issues that I will solve is an important part of engineering, gaining the perspective of how our actions will influence others in less privileged situations. It is an important basis that is often overlooked due to corporate life, achieving this angle allows for the outlook of compromise when trying to achieve global development.
Some of us will probably not be solving problems within our home countries or cultures. The RAP scheme allows us to be surrounded by people who have different backgrounds from ourselves, allowing for a greater perspective and understanding of the social normalities of those cultures. Even though I have experienced many cultures of my own, I have to admit that I have not been exposed to North America. The RAP will allow me to uphold better standards when being exposed to unfamiliar situations in the future in my life, making a positive impact on me as a person to make the best out of all situations and be more open-minded towards unaccustomed situations.
To the residential community, I can bring an enhanced international viewpoint. I have been very fortunate to have experienced my life in Asia and I believe that it is crucial that many others experience isolation from their own culture. I hope to share with others to be more open-minded and look for opportunities in life to get out of their comfort zone, but still understand how to be respectful.
