I have been to a few countries throughout my life. They have all shaped my perspective on the world in their own way
Italy: I went to Italy in 2013 with my family and extended family. We toured the country moving from Rome to Florence to Venice. The trip was magical and showed me that there was so much to see in the world beyond what I knew. That was the point where I knew I wanted to see all that the world had to offer.
Guatemala: I traveled to Guatemala over the 2015-2016 winter break with my family. I saw a nation and culture which was radically different from anything I had seen before. I saw the vast differences between the material conditions many Guatemalans lived in and the ones I and other Americans lived in. It led me to ask questions as to why there is this vast disparity between people and what historical events lead to that outcome. Despite its poverty, Guatemala was one of the most fascinating and beautiful places I had ever been.
Germany, Czech Republic, Austria: I traveled to Germany on a language trip in 2017. This was one of my first attempts at really learning how to converse in other languages.
I have been to the UK and Canada as well, but only briefly during other travels.

The person I want as my neighbor is someone who has a vastly different perspective on the world. She would be from a different state, a different culture, or she may speak a different language. Her experience growing up would not be the same as mine. Perhaps she was from an immigrant family where she is the first to go to college or she may have experienced discrimination which I never faced. These things are important because people of color and women are underrepresented in STEM fields, and in order to think and act globally, it is important to live in a diverse community.
I want her to be different from me, but also it would be ideal if we had some similarities. It would be great if she was as fascinated by math and science as I am; and if she shared a similar endless curiosity for the natural world. The most ideal person would also be someone who also has a passion for social justice. I want a person who wants to learn about the world and wants to make the world a better place.

I want to be a member of the Global Engineering RAP because I want to be with a group of people who are both scientifically minded and also socially conscious. I believe this community would be highly beneficial for my academics and mental health because I would be in a group of academically focused, like-minded individuals. I would also expand my awareness of other cultures and languages which has been a lifelong goal and fascination. I have a goal of doing a study abroad during college and I feel living in the Global Engineering RAP would be a good way to prepare. As for what I would contribute to this community, I am highly politically motivated and have worked as a political canvasser. I have done four years of high school debate, becoming the debate captain. Debate required in-depth knowledge of political issues and understanding of social issues. I have an expansive knowledge of geography and have taken many years of foreign languages. These experiences prime me to be a global thinker and to reinforce a culture of learning and tolerance.
