Twice, I have been fortunate to travel abroad once with my middle school program and once with my family. It is hard to say which of the five countries that I have traveled through are my favorite for they all provided rich, unique experiences. I have traveled through the Netherlands, Belgium, France, the United Kingdom and Ireland. In each country I thoroughly enjoyed learning the history of the country, the old infrastructure such as the aqueducts and water canals for travel, the new rapid multi modal transit options of current day.
Though I have been lucky to travel to more developed countries, I have seen undeveloped areas in other States in our country that have communities with no running water and lack of access to energy. It was unsettling to understand that children my age couldn’t turn on a faucet for warm water or connect to the internet for their studies. I realized how fortunate I am to have the daily comforts that others do not have at all.
These travels experiences have exposed me to different societies, different infrastructure concepts, and drives me to work for solutions for clean air, water, soil, safe food, shelter and more, so everyone in the world can have basic needs, human dignity, and the opportunity to prosper where they live.

While I could pick out certain characteristics of the people I would want to surround myself with, I truly wouldn’t want to find a community that is based on one trait. It would be nice to have kind, caring, and adventurous people to live down the hall, but I feel I would be missing out on many opportunities. When I think about what I want my college experience to be, I can only think of finding a place that will accept me for all my quirks and interests. I want to find a community that pushes me to be the best possible version of myself, but also allows me to do that for others. A community that encourages and supports each other as well as raises the group itself. With that said, this community wouldn’t look down on failure, but instead encourages learning from mistakes and perseverance. I want to be surrounded by peers who aren’t trying to outsmart me or compare results, but rather one that respects me and what I have to say, both in and out of academics, as well as people who push me to look beyond my own life and community to the world around us. Living down the hall from me, I want a welcoming community. I want to be living with people who want to hike at Chautauqua or go rocking climbing with me. I want to be able to lose track of time talking with someone, unknowingly staying up all night. When I go down the hall I want to find people that I can bake cookies with or grab coffee with on Pearl Street, who will be up for anything.
It sounds cliché and many say it, but I truly want to be a part of something bigger than myself and contribute to making the world a better place. Our world is in an existential crisis with climate change where disproportionately those in less developed areas will be impacted the most. We have so much to address and find solutions to help everyone have access to safe water, sanitation, energy, food, shelter and infrastructure and can live in health, dignity and prosperity. I believe becoming a part of this community will provide me opportunities to use my training and education as an engineer and a purposeful person to work with others to find those solutions and be able to implement them. Specifically with my degree, I plan to focus on public health and medicine. This would include access to basic medications and sanitation as well as advanced medical practices that everyone should have access to. Being a part of the Global Engineering community, I hope that I am pushed to look outside the bubble I have grown up in and exposed to the cultures and needs of other countries. I want to be a part of a community that is supportive and works together for the betterment of all. Something that is innovative and collaborative. Personally, I want to be engaged, inquisitive, collaborative, data-science driven, and a dependable part of the residential community. I plan to be a person that people are comfortable working with and have no problem going down to the kitchen to bake cookies with. I will support my peers in their endeavors and hope they would do the same for me. Being a part of Global Engineering RAP would add to my education at CU Boulder and help me to reach my full potential in my career as well as a person.
