I have traveled to the UK, the Caribbean, Israel and Tanzania. I have also spent a lot of time in Canada growing up, as my dad is Canadian and my grandparents, uncle, aunt and cousins all live there. Frequently visiting them in Montreal, I became accustomed to a bilingual environment and the feel of being somewhere very different from my American, suburban towns. My grandmother on my mother's side was Cuban, and although she passed away when I was only 8, she passed on many Cuban traditions to my mom that have enriched my daily life.
Although I have not had the opportunity to study abroad during high school, I am very interested in doing so during my college years.
I would like this person to have similar interests to my own, but to be different enough from me to challenge me. I would like someone that I can reach out to for studying calculus together, but with whom I can also practice language skills while discussing the latest video game or anime. I'd like to be able to safely vent to them when I am outraged by an injustice, whether on the local, national or global stage and who will challenge me to figure out how I can help the situation. Finally, I would want them to be inclusive and non judgmental, respectful of everyone.
I am drawn to the Global Engineering RAP because it's a great fit for my skills and interests. My academic interests include not only engineering, but politics, history, music and global affairs. I am excited by the prospect of taking advantage of opportunities afforded by the global engineering RAP in these areas, including study abroad, coursework, interactions with like minded students and extracurricular activities. By taking full advantage of these offerings, I know that I can find a way to integrate my interests into a unique educational experience. As the Global Engineering RAP focuses on looking outward, I believe it's the best fit for me.
Like all students, I want to excel during my college years in the interest of achieving my degree and training for my career. However, I also want to grow as an individual and a thinker, and I feel that the Global Engineering RAP will give me the tools to do this. I plan to contribute to the community as an eager learner and collaborator, work on learning a second language (developing Spanish and learning either Korean or Japanese). I will also contribute by working diligently on collaborative projects aimed at fighting global problems including climate change and hunger.
