Ever since I could remember, our summer family vacation started with a predawn rush to the airport. My sleepy eyes would blur the world as it shifted through the car and airplane windows. Each year we would alternate between China, where my mother was born, or Cyprus, where my father was born, and after what seemed like a never-ending flight I would be surrounded by unfamiliar surroundings, smells, and people. The languages I was encompassed by would intrigue me, excite me, and when I grew up, they inspired me. I want to see new sights, experience new cultures, and connect with new people across the globe. During my junior year of high school, I had the opportunity to intern in the Department of Neurosciences at the Capital University of Medical Sciences in Beijing, China. Because of my limited Mandarin, I found it difficult to communicate, but by relying on reading, gesturing and the extremely helpful professor, I not only conducted my experiments successfully, but even made friends with people working there.
My travels since childhood have taught me how to cope with the exhaustion and jet lag that go hand in hand with a long international flight. I have learned to adapt to environments drastically different from my own. I have overcome language barriers and made a positive impact. These experiences, and an appreciation of other cultures, have prepared me to be a successful member of the Global Engineering FYAE program.

I want to live down the hall from someone who cares deeply about issues that affect the world. I want to surround myself with like-minded students who believe in using their own talents to help others. Everyone has ideas but most don’t know how to turn them into a reality. We are all here to learn the processes of how to better the human condition through our innovations. I want to live down the hall from someone who has the personal drive and commitment to create their original ideas, and use them to better the world.
I would want that person to be open-minded, and be able to accept people’s differences, and be respectful of them as well. Embracing diversity only makes people into better engineers, allowing them to be inspired by innovations across the globe. I want to form a tight-knit community where everyone feels comfortable enough to share all ideas no matter how trivial or outlandish they may seem. Sometimes with a little tweaking the most whimsical thoughts can be transformed into creative solutions to help others.
I would want this person to be friendly, supportive, and passionate about learning. This would be someone who I could talk to about my passions, even if they aren’t always engineering-based. I would like to make close connections with my peers, and through this program we would build a community of diverse thinkers with the united goal of improving people’s lives.

My passion is to create solutions to improve people’s lives. There is a vast global need for engineering solutions from safe drinking water to the protection of the environment. The disparity between conditions in developed countries and poor regions of the world is massive. As an engineering student I will explore what role I will play in providing solutions to these complex global issues. Becoming a member of Global Engineering FYAE is the first step towards that goal. The program will provide me with an overview of the problems we are facing, and a community of like-minded peers will provide support and inspiration for each other as we try to identify practical solutions to address these problems. The global viewpoint of problem-solving the program provides will help me to become a better engineer, strengthening my commitment to build a more equitable world.
My travels have allowed me to witness the severity of China’s air pollution and the benefits of desalination plants used in Cyprus. They serve as a reminder of the enormous challenges we are facing and the reward engineering solutions can provide by improving the quality of life. At the residential community I will be a supportive team member, always encouraging others to share their diverse perspectives. My creativity in problem solving will only become enhanced when surrounded by peers who also enjoy innovation. Our collaborations will produce a dynamic and empathetic force for positive change.
