I have been fortunate to travel many places with my family. My main memories from India are playing soccer in the small courtyards, walking the packed streets and buying stuff from tiny stores, and, of course, the food. All of my travels to visit my Indian relatives in Canada and Houston revolve around meals, first hanging out in the kitchen and then around the dining table talking. I learned a lot about my family history and journeys of family members, by listening to relatives tell family stories, fine tune one another’s food preparation, and analyze memories of growing up in India then moving to the US and Canada as immigrants. Other travels that affected my perspective on American life include trips to Panama, Thailand, and New Zealand. Through these experiences, I can appreciate beautiful ways of life that are less consumer-driven than in the US and places where there seems to be a national consensus about the importance of nature conservation. My childhood also includes visiting my Native relatives for gatherings and ceremonies. These experiences deepened my understanding of my Indigenous culture and taught me the importance of community and tradition. I realize that all these opportunities helped shape our family way of celebrating people’s stories. Also, our travels influenced our habits where we follow (although imperfectly) principles of environmental sustainability (following recycling rules, growing food, and planting for pollinators).
Over the years, many talented immigrants have come to the US to study or teach engineering, including my own grandfather. Global perspectives have shaped all aspects of engineering research in the US and the infrastructure of our country as their ideas melded into the mainstream. I have seen from visiting India and listening to family stories, that there are things that work in India, but would be considered impossible in the US. It seems like magic to us the way laundry gets cleaned or homemade lunch gets delivered to workers in India. But, it is possible because people have figured out a system. In my IB classes it became clear to me that one person’s experience is not the full picture, and I’ve learned much from the different perspectives of my international friends in high school. I would like to be part of this tradition of idea sharing in a community. I am drawn to Civil Engineering because I can build my mathematical skills and interact with different groups to develop efficient, sustainable solutions to local challenges. CU Boulder is the ideal place for me to grow as a prospective engineer interested in intelligently transforming her community.
I would like to be a member of the Global Engineering RAP at CU because I am interested in engaging with people who bring diverse perspectives to the table. I find that sometimes, when a person offers a thought which at first seems to be out in left field, if you spend some time digging deeper, it might provide a surprise solution or at least a new way to try something. Inventions start with an idea about what is possible. I have always been a person who is in the middle of several friend groups. You need all kinds of people to round out a group and I am the kind of community member who does not try to grab the limelight or push my ideas on other people. People come to me because I am a balanced thinker, good listener, and true friend. UC Boulder’s idea of creating this small global living community will help me more easily find diversity of thought. I hope to learn from others and interact with students who enjoy seeing the world from many points of view.
