Mechanical Engineering
English (5), Spanish (2)
I have traveled to San Jose del Cabo in Mexico to visit my grandparents. This was my first time experiencing another country and it opened my perspective on the world. In my previous Spanish classes I have learned a little about different cultures, but actually experiencing these cultures was unlike anything I have learned. When I first got there I was nervous about people stereotyping me because I am white, but after my grandparents introduced us to their friends, that fear went away. I immediately realized how kind and caring everyone was. Even though there was a language barrier, there was still a connection made as we went to the beach, and did other activities like fish. Learning about this new culture expanded my perspective and gave me a desire to learn about other cultures around the world.
Global experiences and perspectives can improve the field of engineering by helping the engineers see the full picture. Having global experiences shows engineers different perspectives and hope they can improve and expand their thoughts. For example, I have an interest in automotive engineering due to my love for cars. Traveling to Europe and the United Kingdom would drastically help and improve my thinking on cars due to the different types of cars they have. Not specifically different car brands, but certain models of certain cars are only attainable in different countries. Also, most cars in the UK and Europe are right hand drive, bringing an entirely different outlook on driving. This is not just with car design too. About ten years ago, Nissan, a Japanese car company, created this 400 horsepower engine. This is already on the high scale of power output, but it was also extremely efficient, and only weighed ninety pounds. This motor was highly innovative and this could lead to inspiration for even more ideas that are unthinkable. To put this in perspective, the new Ford Mustang's 5.0 liter engine produces about 460 horsepower, while weighing about 444 pounds. Overall, having a global perspective on any type of engineering can be very beneficial and can help engineers excel.
I want to be a member of the Global Engineering RAP at CU Boulder because I think it is the best next step to take in my career. I hold myself to a high standard with everything I do, and to be the best possible engineer I can be, being a member of this RAP will help me achieve that goal. I believe the community will give me the resources I need to take my education to the next level, and that is what I want from college. I will also do my best to contribute and give back to this community because of how helpful this community is. I also think that the Global Engineering RAP will help me as a person, giving me more experiences to learn from.
