I am the first born of two Mexican immigrants that came from completely different cultural landscapes within Mexico in itself. My father grew up in the northern part of Mexico in the countryside with very little urban influence. They depend so heavily on their natural environment and surroundings in order to make a living. Every aspect of development or construction has to correlate and accommodate to the harsh summer heat and still be courteous towards the development of the community. Ranching is at the core of the lively hood of my grandparents and of many others who still live in the little town. I visit almost every summer and I’m frequently amazed that despite the isolation from anything innately urban, it still thrives off of the love for the community. It’s a prime example the influence a persons surroundings have on them and the dependence infrastructure has on every persons life. It’s simply not something that can be contained within just a city or town but is something we all depend on.
I would want to be able to live down the hall from my best friend. Although it doesn’t have to exactly be them, I hope that it’ll be someone who I can become or I can consider them to be my best friend. By participating in the same program, we’ll already have something in common through our passions and goals for not only our education but our individual impacts. My best friend is someone who despite our innate differences within our interests, can still talk openly about them and with vigor. Being able to communicate with them beyond something just superficial and still have time and space to be vulnerable and leave room for discussion.
Engineering isn’t something that can be constrained to just an individual. It’s something that is collectively done. Interworking within peers, other professionals, and to the people who you are serving. At the root of the profession, we are meant to serve our communities in order to ensure comfort, sustainability, and above all safety. By having the opportunity to participate in a program like this, the community and international aspect of engineering I hope will be the forefront of our education. I hope that through this, I’ll be able to collaborate and work with incredibly talented and passionate people in order to increase the sustainability and accessibility of our resources beyond just the school community but to the world-in order to create a more just and unified society.
