Aerospace Engineering

Being from a family that loves to travel, I have been fortunate enough to visit and experience countless diverse locations and cultures. What really sticks with me from each one of these trips, and what draws me to global engineering, is the people. They are funny, joyful, profound, earnest, generous, contemplative, and human. I have used my limited French knowledge to talk to a boy in Martinique who wanted to play table tennis; I have sat around a fire in Egypt talking with Yasser, the owner of an independent bed and breakfast, about his past choices and struggles; I have seen joy on the face of our Thai rock climbing guide, Ping, when he pushed us to achieve more than we could envision; and I have seen countless places where people struggle with poverty. The numbers of begging children and restless vendors always concerned me, but I never had the resources on my own to solve the problem at large. I see the good that can come from a community seeking to aid the struggling, and I want to be a part of that effort. I wish to be able to direct my learning and abilities in a way that relieves burdens that I originally thought unliftable.
I would want to live down the hall from someone who is actively engaged in both schoolwork and in their own life. I find it most valuable to work with people who have a vision for their future and are shaping how they want it to go, because it inspires me to do the same and work on myself. I also like to surround myself with people who are ambitious and hardworking in their studies, but are able to balance that rigor out with an eagerness to work and connect with others. If I am unable to trust the people I work with, then it becomes more difficult to collaborate on novel ideas or bigger projects. Beyond the classroom, I value people who want to learn more through their own interests and hobbies. In Global Engineering, we will all have the same goal and similar studies, but our experiences and what we enjoy are what make us diverse. To me, a diverse group signals inclusion, new ideas, and a willingness to branch out to communities in need.
I want to be a member of the Global Engineering RAP because engineering is more than numbers, calculations, and graphs; it has a human impact. Any practical application of engineering in the real world is to help people, and I am aware that sometimes classroom environments are not enough to do that justice. I want to keep my learning in check with my aspirations and plans for the future. In addition to this, Residential Academic Programs are perfect for bringing people with similar interests together. Colorado is far from my home state of Connecticut, so I need to be able to form strong connections with other students to truly flourish. Global Engineering would provide a community of people that share a common thread: we care about making a difference in the world around us. I intend to be a piece of this support system too, and am confident that my hard-working nature combined with my willingness to aid others’ understanding will contribute to the group’s cohesion.
