I have travelled to Germany 3 separate times, with 3 different levels of German knowledge. The first time, I didn't speak any German except for "Please" and "Thank you", which allowed me to have the typical, but still enjoyable, travel experience in Germany. The second time, I learned enough German to be able to say almost whatever I wanted, but I had only ever listened to non-native German speakers, so I was unable to understand most of what locals were saying. But the third time I went, I had done lots of practice with native-level materials to become fluent in German, so I was able to finally interact with local Germans.
It is very challenging to learn a language well enough to have real conversations with native speakers, but this experience taught me that with great costs come great benefits.

I hope to live down the hall from someone with a hobby or culture completely unfamiliar to me, who is also excited to share this with the rest of the world. This way, I can learn more about some topic I would otherwise have had no connection with.
I hope to join Global Engineering because it will broaden my currently very small world to include more other groups. While I won't be able to contribute to Global Engineering on this front, I will instead be able to contribute academically. In high school, I tutored many of my friends in multiple subjects (especially trig and calc), and I hope to be able to do the same thing in college.
