I moved to the United States when I was 5 years old, about to start kindergarten. Everything was new to me, and I was in a foreign environment. However, that did not stop me from putting myself out there; according to my parents I was one of the most sociable students in my class and made lots of friends. While lots of years have passed since I was that little and I have grown in many ways since then, that same eagerness to meet new people and try new things are an integral part of who I am.
I want my floormates to be passionate and kind. I have been raised to put my all in when it comes to doing something that is important to me, which is bettering the world that we live in. Being out in the field working on developing new technologies for communities is one of the best ways to instill change and leave a positive impact on the world. The Global Engineering RAP is an avenue to do just that. So, I want to know that the people around me are just as invested in helping people because when we are all in then we can do great things. By being a part of this program we would all be living on the same floor in the dormitories. Our floormates are going to essentially be our family for our first year away from our families. We are going to be vulnerable as we are in a new environment. By just being kind, we can make sure that we are caring and providing support for each other. It is crucial that we treat each other with kindness because people do not always remember what you said or did to them, but they do remember how you made them feel.
CU Boulder has around 30,000 undergraduate students with about 7,000 incoming first year students. That is a lot of people. The Global Engineering RAP would help make Boulder feel like a smaller school because it will provide a close knit community for us. I know the importance of finding a place where you feel welcome as I go to a school with about 1,000 peers in my grade. It can be easy to feel alone even when you are surrounded by people, but a community that aligns with your beliefs and values helps you feel like you belong.
This community will provide me support and push me to try new things which will help me flourish as an engineer and as a person. Working on real world projects and seeing the impact in real time is my favorite way of learning. I enjoy the hands-on aspect of engineering because trial and error is the best way to learn what works and what does not. By being a part of this program I would be able to develop technologies that will have a real world impact. I will also be able to meet new people and be placed outside of my comfort zone. This will help me grow as a person because I will get to learn so much from other passionate individuals with different perspectives.
I plan to contribute to the Global Engineering RAP through my love of learning. AP students often have no classes after exams - but that does not mean they have to stop learning. After my APs junior year, I could have easily gone to school for my three required classes, but I decided to spend my entire day at school for the sole purpose of learning. While sitting in a marine biology class, I discovered that there is a specific type of jellyfish that reverts back to an earlier stage of life when damaged making it “immortal”. In a sociology class, I learned that gender equality will not only make communities safer, but it will decrease the problem with overpopulation and resource depletion on Earth. During a World Wars class, I found out that the First World War was the immediate result of an assassination so unorganized that it seemed like the perfect plot for the cartoons. Throughout those two weeks, I spent hours upon hours in the library reading nonfiction novels, academic journals, and true crime. I even spent time in the Activities office learning about and assisting with the ins and outs of the graduation ceremony. This program will push me to continue to investigate further whenever I am unsure of something. My family has started to call me “Curious George” because of my tendency to do this . . . and for my love of monkeys. In fact, it has become a running joke within the people I talk to on a daily basis that they cannot have a conversation without me asking “why” or “how come”. The Global Engineering RAP is the perfect place for me because not only will it embrace my curiosity it will nurture it.
