Several times I have traveled outside the United States. Recently, I have traveled to Italy and Spain for the purpose of vacation. While both countries are very developed and show wealthy economies, the extent of poverty cannot be hidden. Walking towards the Colosseum or tanning on the beach in Barcelona, I noticed trash piling up in alleys or homeless people sleeping in any place possible. I visited the most populous cities in Italy and Spain and with the wealth and the tourism comes poverty and people desperately in need of help. When I was a kid, I lived near Tokyo, Japan. Japan is the only country with a 0% homeless population. I have had the opportunity and the privilege to experience many different parts of the world and have started to build a global perspective. I have had the privilege to see problems regarding poverty and global health firsthand and I believe that engineers have the ability to help solve these problems. I believe my travel experiences have started to prepare me for the difficult task of global engineering. I still have a lot to learn but I want to be able to help by using my previous experiences and my previous knowledge in engineering.
The person I would want to live down the hall from me in the Global Engineering RAP is someone who has had the opportunity to experience other perspectives and cultures. Someone who is kind and thoughtful and someone who will always be open to creating new friendships and opening up to new perspectives. This person must be aware of any and all privileges and prejudices that they may have. What I am trying to say is that this person living down the hall from me must have the ability to care for people and have empathy for others. They must show some sense of responsibility and respect. These facts are important but also I want someone who is a good communicator and someone who wants to work together. If I am to live with this person, go to class with them, and do activities together, I just want them to be nice and be open to making new friends. I just want someone I can trust and someone that I know can help me and the other people in the Global Engineering RAP work towards helping global health.
I want to be a member of the Global Engineering RAP at CU Boulder to further my education as an engineer and add to my experiences and well-roundedness as a person. I believe that this community will provide me with the opportunity to enrich my previous knowledge in biology and engineering as a whole. Additionally, the Global Engineering RAP will provide me with significant time to work with other engineering students and collaboration is always important to solving global health problems. I believe that global engineering will especially help my education and career as a biomedical engineer. Biomedical engineering is key in global engineering as biomedical engineers can help solve poverty and health problems worldwide. Knowledge of and insight into global engineering is necessary for some of the goals of biomedical engineering. Additionally, I believe the Global Engineering RAP will enrich my personal perspective of the world. IN addition, this community will allow me to learn more about different parts of the world and different cultures to enrich my own identity. Every member of the Global Engineering RAP community will have their own background and culture that will contribute to cultivating a diverse and healthy learning environment. Just as other members of the community, I can contribute personally to the residential community with my previous experiences in education, travel, and people. I plan to work with other members of the community and share my valuable experiences and perspectives.
