I have been fortunate to visit several places around the world, including trips to the United Kingdom and China. However, my most recent trip to South Africa was particularly impactful in preparing me for the Global Engineering RAP. In Summer 2022, I had the opportunity to spend about 10 days in the eastern part of South Africa, near its border with Eswatini. I learned a lot about a different culture, including different foods and languages, and I interacted with people who have different backgrounds and world views. One thing I noticed by being in South Africa was the vast differences in income many experienced compared to each other and to those in the US. I witnessed living conditions that are much more different than what I am normally exposed to. In addition, I was blown away by the beautiful wildlife found in South Africa, and I realized that many of these animals, and animals elsewhere, are in danger due to climate change. These experiences inspired me to think about how I can apply my interest, aerospace engineering, to improving the overall quality of life and fighting climate change. I plan to continue traveling to different places around the world so that I can experience different cultures, with my next trip being to Japan in the summer of 2023!
I love aerospace engineering, and one thing that excites me about the CU Global Engineering RAP is the prospect of taking classes specifically tailored to Global Engineering RAP students. However, I also enjoy exploring aerospace outside of class, including playing flight simulator, building remote control planes, and more. I would love to live near someone with whom I can enjoy those experiences.
When I first move in, I will show up with a custom built computer, several custom keyboards, and a flight simulator setup. In my free time, I am often found running through thirty minutes worth of startup procedures for a Boeing 737 on my flight simulator, or maybe tinkering with an Arduino. I would have lots of fun playing the game with others, maybe flying small planes together in the simulator. We could also perhaps fly a large commercial airliner together, acting as co-pilot and pilot, and simulating a commercial flight.
Another hobby that I want to learn is building remote control planes. I am currently researching using an Arduino to take measurements during each flight. It would be even more fun doing this with someone else. We could create something better together through collaboration. I also hope to work towards getting a pilot’s license, and working with a neighbor on achieving this goal would be beneficial for us!
Finally, I want to live near people who inspire me to think differently about the world. I want to be exposed to different ways of thinking from people who have diverse perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds. It would be exciting for me to be with people who see the world differently, such as people who enjoy different kinds of food and have different customs. I believe I can experience this in the Global Engineering RAP.

One societal concern that I believe greatly impacts the global community is climate change. I first became interested in this issue because I love being with and seeing animals, and climate change is a significant threat to native wildlife survival rates and biodiversity. On a recent trip, I had an amazing experience seeing animals in South Africa. However, I also realized that, ironically, the airline system that allowed me to experience this contributes significantly to climate change. While I know that I cannot completely solve climate change, I can contribute to solving a portion of this issue – the impact of aviation. The contribution to climate change made by aviation will continue to increase due to increasing accessibility to air travel. As a result, air travel in its current state is not sustainable. New solutions need to be developed. While many engineers may think of a good technical solution, understanding the whole system of climate change and aviation is necessary for the best solution. This includes understanding economics, culture, and accessibility. With economics, for example, designing and building a more efficient plane will be better accessibility to air travel; however because more people would be flying due to better accessibility, the environmental benefits of efficiency gains would be partially negated. This makes it harder to expand accessibility to air travel while also reducing the climate impact air travel has. I want to work towards fixing these complex problems, and I think the Global Engineering RAP at CU Boulder can help me. In this program, I can grow and better understand the forces driving climate change. I can gain the tools and knowledge to help me with these goals. I believe that learning the system behind climate change instead of just the technical side will help me contribute to society in the most meaningful way possible. I also believe that I can contribute to this community.
I believe I contribute my own unique perspectives and experiences to the program. I grew up in a family and a community that cares for the environment. I often heard discussions about the environmental impacts of our choices at home and in school. I watched my father begin a start-up company to improve consumer food sustainability. As a result, sustainability is a large part of my perspective.
I have also been shaped by growing up as a Mennonite. Mennonites are a Christian denomination formed late during the Protestant Reformation; we are distinctive in emphasizing social justice and peace. The church I attend regularly does small things like planting trees or making school kits to be sent around the world for kids who need them. This has influenced my views on inclusivity, equity, and the environment.
I also have my Chinese side from my mother’s family, which hails from my grandparents’ generation from Macau and Hong Kong. I have grown up hearing Cantonese from my extended family, celebrating traditions during the Mid-Autumn Festival and Lunar New Year, and feasting on delicious Cantonese food like dim sum. In our family, waiting an hour for a table at dim sum is perfectly normal and worth it!

Many of my aviation interests are also shaped by sustainability and accessibility as constraints. This is challenging. For instance, more efficient jets pollute less and allow more people to fly through reduced operating costs. However, increased travel could offset pollution reductions. Making flying more sustainable and more accessible is a challenge that perhaps I can help address by studying aerospace engineering. All of these come together to make me into a person who is eager to collaborate with others and offer experiences to accomplish bigger goals than what could be done alone.
