My father was in the Air Force and also worked for NATO, which resulted in my family moving around a lot and me being born in France! While I remember almost nothing about my time in France, we moved back to the U.S. 3 years later, I do think it contributed to my interest in other countries! When I was 12, my family and I traveled back to France and I was surprised with how different it was from the U.S, namely the transportation! Even at 12, I loathed having to drive everywhere and I did not even have to drive myself! Being able to walk almost anywhere or taking public transportation was something I never experienced in America. When we got back, I began to envy France and other countries for their easily accessible and efficient transportation and eventually how they handled other aspects of their citizens’ lives. I think a lot of people in America and other countries have a phase in which they compare their country to others and realize their country does not measure up. However, as I began to get older and learn more about the world, I realized that no country is truly perfect. What I think is really beautiful and important about pursuing a global perspective, as opposed to one focused on one nation, is acknowledging that we have things to learn from others and things to teach others! Growing up and living in different countries fosters very unique perspectives and sharing them can open up conversations and find new solutions that would not have been considered before! Realizing this has helped me to be more open-minded and strive to create an environment in which these experiences can be shared!
First and foremost, I would want someone living in my hall to be kind. Kindness is a characteristic I value greatly and I do not tolerate people that refuse to be respectful to others. In addition, I appreciate people who are welcoming and helpful. If I need help on a certain problem for an assignment, I want to be able to ask others for help without fear. Furthermore, I want people around me that do not stress perfection. While grades are important, mental and physical health need to be prioritized over academics. I do not want to be in an unhealthy environment where people believe their value is determined by grades. I truly hope that where I live will be a tolerant and inclusive environment for everyone. I want everyone to feel welcome when hanging out or studying together and free to pass on social events if they want to be alone, while still feeling like a part of the community! Strong support systems are a priority for me and I strive to be a person that engenders those connections!
I believe it is important to surround yourself with people who hold the same goals as you, so living around a lot of engineers is an ideal living environment! In addition, having people around you going through the same experiences is a very comforting fact to have! However, the largest reason as to why I think being a member of the Global Engineering RAP would be the exposure to other people’s cultures, perspectives, and experiences! I will admit that in terms of global connection, I am pretty sheltered. It is hard to connect with people outside of my country because of the expense and the fact that most of them are very far away! Despite this disconnection, a career path I am very interested in pursuing is working for the government, specifically the state department, that deals heavily with foreign relations! I think that learning about people different from me and forming strong bonds with them will show me how to succeed in my career. I also really enjoy being a part of a strong community and making lots of friends!
