The summer before my senior year, I traveled halfway across the world to visit my relatives in India. This was the first time I had been to India since I was twelve, as COVID-19 had stopped all our travel plans for years, and I had to relearn India's cultural and societal norms in my teenage years. This taught me the importance of being tolerant, working with people from different backgrounds, and giving respect to others—all of which is necessary for an environment like the one in the Global Engineering RAP. India's different culture and values helped me understand that although there are several different ways of living life, all of them are important and need to be respected. My India trips have prepared me to be successful by teaching me about diverse cultures that should be treated with the same kindness a person would want towards their own culture.
I would want the person living down the hall from me to be a kind person who is as passionate about learning as I am. I would like to go over to their room to study and discuss both our engineering work as well as other cultures. Since I'm studious and prefer to approach problems logically and methodically, I would want the other person to have a similar temperament. However, I also want to make a lot of friends while in the community, so I hope that this person would join me to hang out. Colorado is also a little far from home so a person who can understand or at least empathize with homesickness would be nice.
I am interested in joining because I want to learn more about other cultures and languages, as well as get more global experience as an engineer. Engineering is an international field, so getting hands-on experience would be beneficial to me and my career. The community will also make me a better person by teaching me about the struggles faced by other groups of people and will allow me to find ways to help these people. I will contribute to the Global Engineering RAP by helping with projects and discussing with the other members on issues of climate, poverty, human rights, and more. I ultimately believe the Global Engineering RAP at CU Boulder will allow me to become more culturally aware and help me meet like-minded people who also care about global impact, and this is why I want to be a member.
