Engineering - open option (undecided)
English (5), Spanish (3)
I have not yet had the opportunity to travel outside of the country or study abroad, but it has always been one of my goals. In my career, I hope to pursue areas of engineering that fight and prevent climate change, and a global perspective is essential for tackling global issues such as the climate crisis.
I chose to continue learning Spanish throughout highschool, and I hope to study abroad in a Spanish speaking country while in college. In the west, climate change mainly impacts Central and South America. If I ever have the opportunity to work on projects in Central or South American countries, I hope to be fluent in Spanish to communicate as well as possible and create meaningful international connections.
I want the person who lives down the hall from me to introduce me to new ideas and cultures. I want them to be interested in food, and we would cook each other different types of food from different countries. I enjoy having conversations about similarities and differences in different languages, and it would be interesting to discuss the political state of different countries.
Ideally, this person would also be interested in art. We could discuss art styles that originate from different cultures around the world and share ideas with each other about creative projects we are working on. We could also collaborate on different art pieces and hopefully projects in our courses, too.
I want to create a meaningful connection with the person who lives down the hall from me. We would hold each other accountable for our assignments, study together, and wake each other up if necessary to be on time for exams. I also want to be able to have fun with this person outside of schoolwork. They would have a good sense of humor, and we would joke around a lot. We would explore different restaurants, stand up comedy venues, live music, and other activities in the area together. We would be friends with each other’s friends and go on hikes and camping trips to enjoy the beautiful nature in Boulder, Colorado.
I want the person who lives down the hall from me to be culturally curious, creative and artistic, and passionate about nature. I want them to be someone I can work with, relax with, and have fun with. I hope the person down the hall and I can have a meaningful friendship that could last into our future careers.
I want to be a member of the Global Engineering RAP at CU Boulder so I can be surrounded by people who care about solving global problems with a global perspective. I want to learn about their study abroad experiences so I can expand my own global perspective and find a way to go abroad, too. I hope to connect with engineering students who are passionate about fighting climate change and other global issues. I want to learn about the global problems they aspire to help solve and find people who have the same career goals as me.
As an engineer, this community would help me learn and improve in my studies. If I do not understand something, I am surrounded by other engineering students that might be able to help. And, if one of my peers is stuck on a lesson that I know well, helping them learn would also better my understanding on the topic. Living with people who are studying similar things as I am would be a great advantage because we would be able to help each other easily and thrive together in our studies.
I plan to introduce creativity to the residential community. Art has helped me tremendously in developing my creativity, an attribute that is crucial in problem-solving fields like engineering. I hope to help my fellow engineering students discover their creative side and learn to think in new ways. Whether it's through art, music, or just expressing themselves, everyone has a creative side that is valuable. I also plan to help my peers academically as much as possible. I hope to create a collaborative atmosphere where we all help each other in our studies.
Furthermore, I will encourage my peers to keep an open mind, especially in their future workplaces. There is a lot of discrimination in the engineering field, especially when it comes to gender. As a transgender man, I hope to help my peers learn and grow and find more similarities than differences in people who come from different backgrounds than them. This type of open mind is essential for hearing all ideas and perspectives in order to solve problems as best as possible. Fostering an inclusive and open-minded community with my peers in college will help change atmosphere in our future engineering workplaces for the better.
