Environmental Engineering
English (5), French (3)
When I was 13 years old my parents decided to move to Ireland with the intention of living abroad for one year. They started a new job and enrolled my sister and I in Irish schools. At school, I had to adapt to different expectations while learning what the students social norms were. I was enrolled in 11 different classes including some I had very little or no experience in such as comparative religion, business, and music. Despite the enormous learning curve I was presented I learned how to adapt to new situations and the importance of stepping outside of my comfort zone. During school breaks my family and I travelled extensively throughout Europe, visiting a total of 13 countries before returning home to Colorado after one year. We traveled to many places, including Greece and Germany, that spoke languages that looked and sounded very different from English. My parents taught me that despite the language barrier we were still able to navigate and make our way in a foreign country, and because of this language should never be a barrier for travel. Visiting so many places that I had only read in books up until that point changed my perspective of the world and helped me understand my place in it. Having had the opportunity to live abroad and visit so many places has inspired me to be a global changemaker in the field of sustainability. Having a broad understanding of different cultures and countries I am able to apply my own experiences towards my education. As part of the Global Engineering Community my education will be enriched as I learn alongside people who share my same interests in our global community.
The person living down the hall from me at the Global Engineering RAP is dedicated, hardworking, trustworthy, and kind. They are devoted to helping others less fortunate then them and have an open mind when they learn new things. Having an open mind allows them to better understand the needs of others, making them a good listener when asked and excited to help others when needed. When you need something from this person you can trust that they will keep their promise with you and do the best they can to help you, despite challenges they may face. This person is also incredibly kind, being someone that you can talk to in any situation and has a passion for helping others in times of need. No matter how other people treat them, this person treats everybody with upmost respect and honor. This person's character allows them to better engineer solutions for people around the globe because of their open-mindedness and dedication to service. They are a role model for the people around them, inspiring others to be as kind and hardworking as they are.
The Global Engineering RAP will allow me to combine my passions of environmental justice, problem solving, language, and culture. I want to study environmental engineering to better understand the systems that impact the ecosystems of our planet. These problems are universal, seen in all places that humans live and the global engineering community will allow me to apply my technical skills on a global scale in order to generate positive change. My academic interests spread beyond science and math, I also love learning about different languages and cultures because it allows me to better understand the diverse world that I live in and appreciate other counties and traditions. The global engineering community will allow me to learn with students who have the same level of passion and interest in engineering, culture, and language as I do. This community will allow me to better understand how I can apply engineering skills on a worldwide scale and the connection between technical and interpersonal skills. I will be a dedicated and supportive member of the residential community, eager and excited to help and innovate with my peers. Additionally, my experiences living abroad and traveling will provide a unique perspective in the community, having had a variety of experiences in different countries and cultures. The Global Engineering community is the perfect place for a student like myself, who wants to be a catalyst for global change through engineering.
