I Irish danced for about 10 years and was required to travel to multiple major cities for competitions. No city stuck out to me as much as Portland, because of the sheer amount of poverty. I still vividly remember walking around the city and seeing what have to have been 10 blocks full of homeless people waiting in line for a shelter. Living close to a city, I had seen plenty of homelessness before then, but Portland really put it into perspective for me to how big the problem actually is. I have always been surrounded by the stigma that homeless people are dangerous, and because of that I used to be afraid to help. Seeing them in volume allowed me to realize that they are still people and still a community, and there is no reason why I should not try to make a difference in their lives. My hope is that one day I will go to Portland again, and see no evidence of poverty.
I am the type of person who is motivated by having hardworking and dedicated people around me. In addition, enjoying my college experience is extremely important to me. Therefore, I want the person that lives down the hall from me to be serious about their education, but also dedicated to having a fun social life.
For years, I have been told the importance of finding a community in college. It is extremely important to me that I find a group of people with similar interests to me, but also a diverse set of skills that I can learn from and utilize. I believe that the Global Engineering RAP at CU Boulder would be the type of community to fulfill these requirements. It is open to different types of engineering which means there is a wide variety of skillsets, and requires the interest of making impactful global developments. I chose engineering because I want to make an impact. Therefore, I see this as my opportunity to learn even more about the differences I can make as an engineer.
