One of the most important values to me is always having a home that I can plant roots in to establish a strong sense of community, connection and self-awareness/identity. However, I didn’t come to this conclusion until a couple years ago because just as I was establishing these values, my family and I moved to a small island in the Mediterranean called Cyprus. For the next couple of years, I called this island home. During this time, my family took advantage of our close proximity to Europe and chose to travel to many new countries to explore the food, culture and language. Visiting places such as London, Rome, Greece and Dubai introduced me to a different side of the world. Especially as someone who is from North America, I quickly realized the way of life in Europe and America greatly differed and it was quite a cultural shock to say the least. In the time I was granted I learnt bits and pieces of the Greek language and embraced the Cypriot culture. However when we returned to Canada, I was overwhelmed with the things I had missed out on even though I should have been reflecting on my experiences. I was too caught up with the things that were taken from me in a sense. Today, I am forever grateful for the things I got to do and experience while living overseas and traveling Europe and will openly embrace anything to a similar extent without hesitation which will be beneficial to me as a member of the Global Engineering RAP. As an individual part of this group, I look forward to sharing my stories but also listening and being educated by the stories of others who have done similar things or things completely opposite of the spectrum so that I can be a well-rounded individual and form roots as an engineering student at CU Boulder.
As an individual who has travelled and met an extraordinary amount of people from diverse cultures and backgrounds, I greatly value the contribution people who I surround myself with make to my life. When I envision myself stepping into the dorm of the Global Engineering Residence Academic Program, the first person I want to meet is someone who embodies all the qualities of a leader. It may seem basic, but someone who is capable of taking charge and has the ability to lead a diverse group of students with different backgrounds and unique stories is truly inspiring. I know a person like this will support me through my challenges and celebrate my successes alongside me while always assisting me on how I can improve and grow as a person. I also want this person to be able to listen to others and take criticism kindly, so that everyone feels heard and acknowledged to ultimately work together to make the best out of their time at CU Boulder as well as experience the Global engineering program. Lastly, the most important thing for this person to be is to be just another person. I want to live next to someone who will share my struggles in being a freshman in a new city and a brand new university. Someone that is personable and I can talk to about the silliest things completely unrelated to academics. Someone who will make me laugh and smile and feel at home. Someone who is relatable and I can talk to about my hobbies and interests. The most important thing about this person is that they make me feel at home and 100% comfortable to be myself at CU Boulder so that I can succeed in all aspects of my next stages in life.
Canada has always been my home. However, I’ve always known I wanted to leave my home and my country for post-secondary studies and that has played out to be in the US. To be a member of the Global Engineering RAP at CU Boulder would allow me to seek out things further than what may be available to me as just any other student at CU Boulder. I strongly value the idea of community and connectivity, so to be part of this program will only further strengthen this and allow me a connection to Boulder that will be unforgettable. I want to be able to look back on my time as a student at Boulder and be reminded of the good experiences I searched for and how they’ve shaped the person I will be. I will be able to make friends and connections with professors that care and I want these relationships to be a vital aspect of my student life. Receiving this training will only advance myself when I look towards my engineering career and future because I will have a further understanding of the workings of the world in an industry I know I will belong in. To gain knowledge and experience as a freshman student will help define my interests and tailor my skills as a student and person. Especially as a woman in a male dominated career, having this extra opportunity will enhance my resume and place me higher on the competitive scale to any other individual because of the skills that I wouldn’t have gained elsewise. As an individual my strong values and eagerness to attend CU Boulder will reflect greatly on being a member of this program. My personal contribution will be in my participation in residence events and in always going to lend a helping hand to anyone who needs it and I will always jump at the opportunity to try new things and meet new people to become connected in university.
