About the Lecture
Many Americans past and present have regarded the Catholic Church as a foreign, authoritarian enemy of our nation’s rights and liberties. However, American Catholics have been, in fact, eager to adopt the republican ethos of the United States. This ethos required protection for religious minorities like Catholics themselves on the grounds that their rights come from God. Moreover, the primary purpose of American government was the very protection of this and other rights that Catholic immigrants lacked in their native countries.
