City of Cheraw Community Complex

The development of the blank block in Cheraw, Colorado, transforms an underutilized site into a vibrant community hub. Located in a central area and spanning a generous footprint, the site offers immense potential to become a safe, engaging space for children, families, and residents of all ages.
The project is organized around several key elements. At its heart is the Pavilion, designed as a central gathering space for social activities and community events. Equipped with solar panels, the Pavilion generates the electricity needed to illuminate the park sustainably.
A garden and water feature wind through the site, connected to a recycled water splash system. Water from the splash irrigates the garden and cycles back into the feature, creating a serene walkway with calming water sounds and naturally cooler air on hot summer days.
Additional amenities enhance the park’s functionality, including a basketball court, soccer field, parking spaces, and multiple gathering areas, offering a variety of recreational opportunities for the community.
This project was developed by the Community Engagement, Design, and Research Center (CEDaR) at the University of Colorado Boulder, drawn by CEDaR research assistant Amin Shafaeian, and funded by The Office for Public and Community-Engaged Scholarship. Through its combination of sustainability, recreation, and inclusive design, the project reimagines an empty block as a dynamic center for social interaction, play, and relaxation, fostering community connection while providing safe, accessible outdoor space for all residents.
