Francesco Domenico Moccia

Francesco Domenico Moccia is a professor emeritus of planning for the University of Naples Federico II in Naples, Italy. He was head of the university's planning department, coordinated master's programs in landscape, territorial and urban planning as well as in forensic urbanism, local development planning, and urban planning.

Moccia is secretary of the National Institute of Urbanism; a member of Landscape and Architecture Quality Observatories of Campania Region; on the steering technical committee of River Contracts and on the scientific committee of the Association for the Collaboration between Ports and Cities. He also served as vice president of Metrex–European Association of Metropolis, as well as was a national representative of the Association of the European Schools of Planning, a member of the executive committee of the Italian Society of Urbanists and a member of the board of directors of the Architecture and City Annals Foundation.

Each year he leads the International INU Study Day and the Planning Literature INU Prize, and he directs the academia book series and belongs to many planning journal scientific committees. He has served as a visiting professor at the University of Colorado Boulder, Program in Environmental Design (2018); the  Department of Civil, Environmental and Natural Resources Engineering, Luleå University of Technology, Luleå, Sweden (2015), the Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade do Porto (2009), and the University of Pennsylvania, Department of City and Regional Planning (1986-87).

He served in local governments as head of the Department of Urbanism in the Province of Naples (Dec. 2003 to June 2009), City of Caserta (Sept. 2009 to Dec. 2010), and Afragola (NA) (May1995 to Oct. 1996).

His research has involved the National Cilento Park planning, decision support system on land management (European Grant), mixed urban hazards, resilience of open urban space to stormwater in climate change time, landscape preservation, infrastructure national policy, local development, strategic planning and community planning. He was a consultant for many municipalities during the municipalities' urban planning: Baronissi (SA), Casapesenna (CE) e Crispano (NA) urban plan approved, Agropoli (SA), Marigliano (NA), Qualiano (NA), Sassano (SA), Vitulazio (CE) adopted Casal di Principe (CE), Vietri sul Mare (SA), Afragola (NA) preliminary stage Villaricca (NA), Pago del Vallo di Lauro (AV), Volturara (AV), Castello di Cisterna (NA), Atena Lucana (SA) (in progress). He also consulted for the for the urban projects: Castellammare di Stabia urban program “PIU EUROPA;” Afragola, PUA San Marco; and the Sassano PUA Historic center.

Moccia is the author of 12 books and the editor of 27. He made 136 book contributions and wrote 130 articles, published in the following journals: European Planning Studies, Urbanistica, Land Use Policy, Journal of Transport Geography, Frontiers in Plant Sciences, Archivi di Studi Urbani e Regionali, Territorio, Storia della Città, Urbanistica Informazioni, Urbanistica Dossier, TeMA, TRIA, CRU, BDC, planum, ARQ, Rassegna Aniai, L’industria delle Costruzioni, il Giornale dell’architettura.com.
